I'm always surprised at how John continues to re-invent himself with every album, and that is his gift!

Six of the songs are from 5 previous albums, some of which are the original versions and others that have been re-worked and/or re-written, like the wonderful raw-sounding acoustic "She Lay Down By the Water". "Our Love is Gonna Grow" is tinged with a Van Morrison melodic sound as well as the chorus of "Sleepwalker" is like Lindsay Buckingham meets John Lennon.

"Homecoming" is lovely, "Time of the Shining Angels" (with his foot gently tapping in the background) is a favourite with lines like "heaven flies between us". But my true favourite is "Tryin To Get To You", especially the melodic key of the words "morning star upon my door". What's strangely absent is the exquisite "(So Far For) Beauty" which is on the "Crown of Life" CD.

Once again John weaves his magic. A truly lovely CD.

Alexander Varty for the Vancouver Georgia Straight

This is one curious item. There is no doubt that the accompanying CD's contains some of the most nakedly intimate music this Juno-winning musician has ever penned.

Nancy Lanthier for the Vancouver Sun

John Bottomley's graceful folk casts an eerie spell on first time listeners.

Mara Brenner for the Bowen Island Undercurrent

Remarkable.

Joy Sculnick Curiouser online Mag, Montreal

"The world John Bottomley has created in 'Star in the Singing Grove' is beautiful and fantastic. It is especially innocent. Joni Mitchell sang of getting back to the garden. 'Star in the Singing Grove' takes us there. John Bottomley is an artist not to be ignored."

Tom Harrison, The Vancouver Province

Describing Bottomley's idealistic venture is difficult. It's a book containing his drawings, prose that tells a fantasy and poetry. It is accompanied by two cd's meant to be heard concurrently with the reading. The songs stand on their own, folk-based but informed by his background in rock. The writing will recall Lewis Carroll and J.R.R Tolkien and fans of either(or the Harry Potter Books)might enjoy Bottomley's lively imagination. What is fun is that he seems as surprised as the reader/listener by his own discoveries.
