Album Notes
The second release from the Kansas City BOULEVARD BIG BAND recorded in 1996 is a superb package of straight ahead modern big band sounds. Leader/trumpeter Michael McGraw has assembled a top notch group of Kansas city players. The compositions and arrangements are all done by members of the band with the exception of In Your Tender Care. Composer/Arranger/tenor sax man Dan Gailey won the prestigious IAJE Gil Evans Fellowship for the compositions contributed to this date. The solos are excellent throughout. Guest artist Eric Marienthal does battle with Bill Caldwell on Chuck Tumlinson's Attack of the Tenor Titans, plays a burning solo on Tumlinson's arrangement of St. Thomas and finishes up his appearance with a Tour De Force performance on In Your Tender Care. The highlight of the recording may be Bill Caldwell's stunning tenor work on Gailey's haunting arrangement of Bobby Troup's standard The Meaning of the Blues. Altogether, a very strong date from a swinging contemporary big band.

Boulevard Big Band
I continue to give this band five stars because it continues to produce quality, hard swinging contemporary big band music. tight section work, great soloists and good tunes make this band every bit as good as left and right coast units. I tend to gobble up work of bands I like and I have all of their available albums...
