Album Notes
The third recording from this Kansas City based ensemble is another hard swinging, straight ahead big band date. The charts are written and arranged by members of the ensemble. Frequent collaborator Frank Mantooth penned two fantastick originals for this session. The mysterious "AL Dente" features tenor sax man Bill Caldwell and guest artist Tom Harrell on fluegelhorn. The title track also features Tooth on piano and soprano sax work by Hal Melia. Trombonist Steve Dekker contributes his original "No Strings Attached" featuring himself (Check out the solo break!) and Jay Sollenberger with a beautifically lyrical flugelhorn solo. Dekker also contributed his hip-hoppy arrangement of "Star Eyes" featuring Frank on piano and guest artist and tenor sax giant Pete Christlieb. Other highlights include Hal Melia's arrangement of "Old Devil Moon" with Hal on Alto and Steve Dekker on Trombone. The set closes with Chuck Tumlinson's original "Tenor Tantrum". Bill Caldwell and guest Pete Christlieb tear it up on this tenor battle. If you are a fan of straight ahead contemporary big band you won't want to miss this one.

great big band album
this is a great, swinging big band album by the Boulevard Big Band. solid lead work, great soloists including Pete Cristlieb on tenor sax make this a must-have by fans of contemporary big band music. this band is as tight and swings as hard as any on either coast.
