The first eight songs on "Sound the Shofar" are based on texts from the Daily Amidah and the Shabbat Amidah, continuing the work that began for me with "Shirei T'fillah (Songs of Prayer)." Pete Seeger's "Turn! Turn! Turn!" is based on text from Ecclesiastes. The final track, "American Dreamer," which was recorded in 1977, is about my grandfather, Morris (Moishe) Plotka, who I observed praying the Daily Amidah when I was a child. My hope for these songs is that they will provide others with an accessible way to understand and, if desired, to memorize these prayers in order to pray them, to be mindful of what is important in life, of what is good and of what is expected of us.
