Album Notes
Nick Bratkovich was born in Milwaukee WI in 1951. He is a son of Serbian parents who immigrated to the United States after World War II. He began playing the accordion at age 6 and started his first band at age 13, the popular Šumadija Orchestra of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He performed with this group throughout the 60's at Serbian churches and ethnic folk festivals in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Ontario, Canada. During the 70's he was a member of the famous Beograd Orchestra of Milwaukee, performing at the Saratoga Lounge on South 16th Street. It was during this time that he expanded his repertoire to include not only Serbian music, but Balkan and International folk music as well. While living in Texas during the 80's, he performed solo for both Serbian and International folk dancers in Dallas, Austin and Houston. He currently lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma with his wife Nancy. They have three grown children living in Texas, Louisiana and Utah. He still performs with the original members of the Šumadija Orchestra, now known as the Kumovi Orchestra of Los Angeles, California, and he also enjoys performing solo for international folk dancers in Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The Serbian Heritage CD is produced by Bratkovich Music of Tulsa OK. All MIDI and acoustic instruments, all vocals, all arrangements, and all orchestrations are performed by Nick Bratkovich. All original compositions are copyrighted and published by Bratkovich Music. The music consists of traditional ethnic dances, as well as original compositions. Though the CD celebrates the artist's Serbian heritage, the songs are still recognized as favorites by international folk dancers of all nationalities.

Very impressive CD. Artistry is superb and reflects a deep understanding of the
This is a wonderful introduction to Serbian music and culture. The musical patterns are intriguing and the adherence to ancient sounds and varying tempi are impressive. We thoroughly enjoyed this CD and agree with the previous reviews. A great time-travel into a multi-layered culture.

"Alive!" sound, rich texture, great CD
Nick's selection of songs reflects the breadth of culture and history of the Serbs as much as is possible in only 12 songs. The instrumentation in these selections sparkles with life. In the songs that include words, Nick sings both melody and harmony, which is a technique that assures a perfect match of sound and style. What's interesting about his vocals is that, in contrast to the crisp instrumentals, the singing is almost rubato in style, creating a rich, lush texture to the entire piece. Like eating something smooth and spicy at the same time (cheesecake and cinnamon? pudding and nutmeg?). I love listening to this CD! And if you like the music of the Balkans, you should too! The liner notes are interesting and informative, too.

I love this album. I love all of the songs, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be "Amerika." It is an amazing song that is fitting to so many of the young men who came to this country. Nick has a fabulous voice and awesome musical abilities.
