belle of the brawl

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
BUST is a collaboration of four of New York's most eclectic musicians. "belle of the brawl" is their first full length album.

B. Howell : Guitars, Vocals
Based in Brooklyn, NY by way of Shreveport, Louisiana, B. began penning songs way back when pens and paper still ruled the day. B.'s vividly cryptic lyrical qualities evoke comparisons with Syd Barrett, Bob Mould and Frank Black. An accomplished guitarist, his songs first made their way into the New York rock scene with the late 90's punk trio, Finless Brown. In 2001, B. struck out in a new direction, forming BUST.

Pete Drungle: Drums, Keys, Percussion
Native Chicagoan Drungle has a knack for mastering any instrument he chooses. Drungle's manipulation of the sheepskins and the ivories contribute to belle of the brawl's distinctive sound. His talents are no secret; he has worked with artists such as Ronald Shannon Jackson, Rufus Wainwright, Rob Reddy, and Andy Timmons. Along with his role in BUST, Drungle is involved in projects with Michael Portnoy and Angry Dragon, and is scoring two feature films.

Ken Heitmueller: Bass
In the mid-90s, Heitmueller's bass work helped drive the indie sound of suddenly, Tammy! After releasing the critically acclaimed We Get There When We Do on Warner Bros. the band split-up, opening the door for Heitmueller to join BUST. Originally from Lancaster, PA, Heitmueller founded and operates 24 Recording 24, a NYC recording studio. His production and engineering can be found on works by the likes of the Pernice Brothers, the Preons and of course, BUST.

Jeff Young: Lead Guitar
Young's multifaceted guitar work has been honed over the past twenty years in and around his native Fort Worth, Texas. Before signing on with BUST, Young often performed with the likes of Tiombe Lockhart and Lamont Reese. Not one to be held to just one project, he also fronts his own jazz ensemble, the Jeff Young Band, and instructs up-and-comers in the art of playing guitar.

One of My Top Ten For 2003
A truly great record from an extremely talented lot. Tons of wry grins brought on by lyrics bathed in sonic bliss. Sharp sounding acoustic guitars that submit to powerful organs, wah-wah ripping solos in these songs that are at once, hilarious, dark, and musically dynamic. The song "Not the Funny One,"  about the character Michael from the 70's television show Good Times reminds us of Florida Evans' aspirations for her son while she simultaneously "rocked the no frills fro." Funny One starts with nasty organ intro, runs on a simple tasty riff for a bit, and eventually morphs into a hot guitar/organ powered jam. "Daddy's Little Girls, a song that celebrates how porn stars of yesteryear unselfishly tempered the pains of puberty for so many adolescent boys by vicariously offering their genitals for this priceless service. "Leaving (Sick & Sad), " a tasty piece of bittersweet melancholia that calms and erupts with equal power. Bust is the brainchild of B. Howell who has written songs that will surely cause a head bob and/or LSD perma grin to appear with each literal and cryptic lyric. Pete Drungle wears many hats on this CD, keeping steady grooves on the skins and providing perfect piano and organ touches to songs (especially on Good Doctors). Jeff Young uses the songs, not gratuitously I might add, to put on a clinic on tasty Fender fills and solos. The CD was produced and engineered by ear canal expert Ken Heitmueller (ex- suddenly, Tammy!) who also contributes some nice low end thump. Uniquely excellent.
