Album Notes
Sometimes things are familiar but you can't describe it. Well that's what Blazz is. It takes what could be blues and gives just enough Jazz to soothe the blues away. Like taking a drink to relax and not to get drunk.

Go Calvin
I saw Calvin last night at Margarita Rocks in Upland California. We host the Blues Brews and BBQ there once a month. Calvin blew everybody away. He is a legit monster on the guitar and has a wonderful smokey voice; highly creative; a shear pleasure to listen to; very entertaining; very bluesy; very jazzy. All behind this very laid back down home personality. Kinda like a 21st century version of Mississippi John Hurt with a Tele and a tube amp.

Refreshingly Original
If you haven't been exposed to the music of Calvin Brown, ya' might want to visit CD Baby and drop 99 cents into the cyber-coin slot and hear this refreshingly unique fusing of Blues and Jazz (Blazz) titled "When My Guitar Speaks".
Those in attendance at Margarita Rocks on Wednesday were in for a nice treat. When you hear Calvin's speaking voice, you may expect his vocals to be a cross between Howlin' Wolf and Captain Beefheart. Maybe a little. But, it's actually more emotively smooth and downhome.
The guitar playing should impress music fans in many genres rooted in Blues. Some opined a comparison to Buddy Guy and others Jimi Hendrix. Calvin's voice and guitar playing (to these ears) at times audibly flashed some aspects heard in the guitar playing of Robin Trower and the vocal timbre of Trower's vocalist/bassist James Dewar. "When My Guitar Speaks" is wrapped into unexpected chord changes with a Jazz player's approach to song arrangement. It's still melodic. And I swear, there's a chord change or two I might've expected from George Harrison occasion. Now don't get me wrong. This is "Blazz". I get the feeling that Calvin has listened to and enjoyed many genres of music. Whether it's intentional or not, this is what makes Calvin compelling to these ears.
The crux of the biscuit? How often do you get to hear "new" music in the Blues genre that's not going to sound too much like what's come before it already? Chris Thomas' "20th Century Blues From The Hood" was the last unique approach to Blues this writer has heard - and that was in the early 90's. This is "Blazz". It sounds like Calvin Brown and no one else. Refreshingly original!

Your have many choices in the Blues genre which may attract your attention thanks to commercial promotion. Calvin Brown is someone we were introduced to via the Margarita Rocks Blues jam. "When My Guitar Speaks" was a highlight. So, BYOB would like to introduce you to CMD & Friends featuring Calvin Brown
