Canut Reyes is one of the most unique gipsy singers and one of the pillars of the famous Gipsy Kings, this album is a tribute to his father Jose Reyes, famous singer of Cante Jondo (in Andalusian folk music it means "deep song", and is considered the deepest form of vocal expression in flamenco), style which Canut is keeping alive today.
This album originated in a collaboration between Canut and the brothers Gildas and Jean-Baptiste Boclé while they toured as bassist and keyboardist with the Gipsy King, where they started to jam and write songs with Canut while on the road in Japan ( "soledad" was recorded and mixed on a laptop computer in a Hotel room in Tokyo..) , the brothers brought to the project the richness and diversity Canut wanted to highlight , they both have a strong composing and arranging background as well , which is obvious in the pieces that include a symphonic string ensemble.
The singular voice of Canut , supported by rich and unexpected compositions and arrangements , recorded between Tokyo , Paris , Arles , New York and Brno , make this album a journey into Canut's poetic and dreamlike universe.

UNBELIEVABLY BEAUTIFUL!
Many people have heard of the Gipsy Kings, but don't know the names of the members of the group, the five Reyes brothers and three Baliardo brothers. So the name CANUT REYES may not ring a bell with a lot of people as they browse this website for songs or CDs to buy. As a member of the Gipsy Kings, Canut Reyes may be best known for his song "Montaña."
I've been a Gipsy Kings fan for many years, and have been eagerly awaiting the release of Canut's solo album, GITANO. It's a tribute to his father, the great singer José Reyes. Canut has been working on his new music for a long time, and has struggled to get the CD released, since he hasn't had the help of any big company. This is so unfair, since the album is so wonderful. Congratulations to Canut, and to cdbaby.com for supporting the album!
I wish I knew enough about music to have the words to describe why the songs on GITANO are so great. Someone once wrote that the Gipsy Kings' music appeals to "anyone with a pulse." The same is true of GITANO. Canut has remained true to his Gipsy roots, while experimenting with new musical styles. Canut wrote on his blog that he met a Gipsy in his home town of Arles, France, who told him, "I've heard your new music, and I'm even prouder to be a Gipsy."
The three songs that were released separately before the release of the album, "Sirenas," "Gitano," and "La Salvadora," are good examples of how Canut has surpassed himself in new and different ways. GK fans will recognize "Soledad" and "Legende," that Canut sang on Gipsy Kings albums, but the arrangements and lyrics are different, and Canut has continued to mature as a singer. The album also includes Canut's unique rendition of the standard "Besame Mucho," and a version of the folk song "500 Miles" with Spanish lyrics.
The best word to describe GITANO is a Spanish word that is really untranslatable: "EL DUENDE." From Wikipedia: "El duende is the spirit of evocation. It comes from inside as a physical/emotional response to music. It is what gives you chills, makes you smile or cry as a bodily reaction to an artistic performance that is particularly expressive. "
Don't hesitate to get the entire album GITANO; you won't be disappointed!
