Hawai`i is where I grew up, learned to play music and where my heart belongs. That’s what inspired the theme for this one-man project. And my recent acquisition of a personal 24-track recorder allowed me to express my music the way I envisioned it by playing all the instruments, singing all the parts, and engineering the mix according to my taste.
Each song has its significance to me. I have never played E Mama E on stage, but I’ve wanted to record this song for my mom. It is also a small way of repaying Jerry Byrd for the steel guitar and life lessons he gave me.
I learned Lahaina Luna from my seventh grade teacher, Mr. George Camarillo. Hawaiian Superman has the guitar slinger battling the ukulele jumping flea. Carl’s Theme is my original contribution to the playlist.
I tried to teach all these songs to my students as a way of sharing the aloha of Hawaiian music. I now share the aloha with you.
