Cathy was born in Fort Fairfield, Maine and became interested in music at the early age of eight. Her father noticed her interest and fixed up an old guitar that he had found in the basement. With a little help along the way from her uncles, she learned a few guitar chords, and has been singing and playing ever since.
Cathy performs at festivals and hootenannies in Maine and nearby Canada, and at local bars and clubs in Maine, Canada and upstate New York. She also performs at churches, hospitals and other non-profit organizations.
She plays 6 and 12 string acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums, and fiddle. The music she plays is that of some of the world's great singer/songwriters, including Gordon Lightfoot (her favorite), Bob Dylan, Dan Fogelberg, Paul Simon, Kris Kristofferson, Jim Croce, Kate Wolf, Davie Graham, Steve Goodman, Eric Clapton and Joan Baez. Her fingerpicking is exceptional, whether playing rhythm, lead, or a combination.
Songs For A Winter's Night is Cathy's first CD. Recorded at Grant Avenue Studios, in Hamilton, ON, by Bob Doidge and Amy King, this CD brings together 12 of Cathy's favorite cover songs, plus one original instrumental.
It goes without saying that many of the songs - 6 to be exact - are by Gordon Lightfoot. In these songs you will hear how Cathy's fingerstyle arrangements capture the signature sound of the original recordings in a new way. The title track, Song For A Winter's Night, is a great example of this, where Cathy plays a combination of the rhythm part (Gordon) and the original lead licks (originally played by Red Shea), and she plays this simultaneously, not as a dubbed track.
Also included are songs by Jim Croce, Kate Wolf, Eric Clapton, Steve Goodman, Dan Fogelberg, and the popular guitar instrumental Anji, by Davie Graham.
There is a nice mixture of fingerpicking and strumming, and wonderful arrangements by the very talented Bob Doidge, who also did the arrangements for two of the songs on Lightfoot's 2004 CD (and the recording of the entire album). Doidge plays high-string guitar, bass, accordian, drums ... and sleigh bells ...
