ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The unique approach of vocals over electric bass only. Beatles-esque harmonies. One song seamlessly flowing into the next one throughout the whole record. Vocal stylings (and songwriting influences) ranging from Arthur Lee (of Love) to Robin Zander (of Cheap Trick) to Corey Glover (of Living Colour) to Alex Chilton and Chris Bell (of Big Star) to King's X to Prince to Elliot Smith to Joni Mitchell and many many more.

THE CHAIR PROJECT is mainly just one person: Jeff Couch (AKA Chairman) of DRATS!!!, the eccentric art-punk sextet from Portland, Oregon. As mentioned above, Chairman often utilizes the approach of vocals over electric bass only (listen to tracks such as "Straight Commission" and "Almost Silence"). And those vocals go from growling to falsetto - sometimes in the same song - but it's always melodic. Lots of moods here for sure - this is a record that takes you through a few slices of life and some different emotions. The record was made in Portland, and again it is called 'Random Conversation.' So the album gets its title from the lyrics of the song "Hollywood":

hollywood, not the one we know in California
cars honk at you on this Sandy road
porno store, guaranteed to satisfy your fantasy
man is at the door having a smoke
medical building open 'round the clock
you look inside then go
the sidewalk said 'suck me'
grocery store parking lot
a stranger shares a little of his soul
a random conversation...

Stripped down and lo-fi, this is a personal record with real diversity in both mood AND musical style.

A Random Conversation with The Chairman
For those of us who occasionally do not wish to be beaten into submission by our choice of listening material or rendered deaf in the name of artistic license,The Chairman(AKA Jeff Couch) offers a seemingly minimal yet wonderfully diverse and textured musical alternative. His inventive melodies and arrangments remind me very much of expressive English and American rock(like Cheap Trick & XTC)delivered with a full, powerful, and at times strikingly soulful voice. This guy can sing! No stranger to shade and nuance,he explores the broad boundaries of emotion within his voice sometimes inside of a single song, lending the tunes a raw and inmmediate feel.I knew I was hooked when I started humming"Almost Silence" in the shower! Pure talent served straight up with no frills.A must Listen!

Totally awesome soul music coming from a guy you'd never think had it in him. Chairman is a huge musical talent and an amazing showman, see him live if you can.

Smart, catchy, mellow, and beautiful.
This cd will grab you, sucking you in to it's wonderful bass lines as it beats you over the head with it's heartfelt lyrics. Very minimal instrument wise, but the songwriting and the bass grooves are very full. A MUST HAVE!!
