The moon stood still for a night bird's song. Chakra Bird, the band fronted by Atlanta singer Pam Howe (formerly of Cicada Sings, Ramadamafia and Ph Balance), nests hip hop with jazz and scribbled samples for a sophisticated, mysterious, cinematic pop mingling of things of light emptying into things of dark emerging as things that are neither. Or both!
Pam has been living in seclusion on the side of a mountain outside Asheville, NC. A renewal that she thought would last for 6 months has now moved into 7 years. The silence, peace, no pace and beauty of her mountain retreat lulled her into an extended reverie. The Night Blooming Bird album was created and recorded from this retreat. Along with long time collaborator Chris "Fatty" Burt, Pam has created an album of shifting shades and modulating tones (night bird caws). The bumping hip hop track "Carefully Placed Trees" is a danceable commentary on modern life from the perspective of "every bird, every tree, shades and swallows me" . The violin scribblings of "Falling in the Next Life" are a trip hop throwback/thrust forward 21st Century dive. Land.
The beats are fat. the samples are poetic. The night is a bird that blooms with strong melodies framed by and textured with moody jazz samples and an expert pop sensibility.
Pam's distinctive voice, is the bloom in this night bird. Cresting, cawing, conversational, and soulful. In the tradition of the clearest jazz singers to the rawest beat poets.
The record is an authentic document of eye-filled beauty, removed from society. Where this night blooms is an unravelling and a mystery that evolves to become a revealing new dream of vitality. This night bird's song goes: love!
