When people experience Charisa the ViolinDiva for the first time, most have a reaction somewhere between surprise and disbelief. A fiercely passionate violinist playing and singing in front of a live band, is a relatively unusual sight; especially in the realm of rnb and jazz. Yet here she is, masterfully leading a 6 piece band through poignant prose and gripping grooves. The Prelude EP is a soulful amalgam of funk, jazz, gospel, and blues featuring Charisa's powerful vocals and shimmery strings.
The New York Times dubbed Charisa as “a particularly fine [artist], slicing at her electric pink violin and belting about freedom... watch [your] back....” , while the legendary songwriter Val Simpson said of her talent, “that the world has been waiting for an artist as powerful and uniquely refreshing as [Charisa].” After years of paying her dues on the stages of New York, including collaborations with artists such as Mos Def, Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, and Estelle, the Prelude EP represents Chari'sa first endeavor into encapsulating the unique elements of her live soulful presentations.
Incorporating both classic and contemporary elements, the Prelude EP weaves a sparkling aural tapestry from the first notes of the “Introlude”, a foray into stacks and layers of funky strings. Her “Afro Blue , revisited” transforms the jazz standard to a pulsing, moving dance classic, with throbbing bass lines and smooth harmonies. The original Soul Journey, plaintively mourns and wails exhorts the listener to “step into [their] sun,” to chase their dreams, while the soft moans of the closing solo violin solo sound like the prayers of a spiritual. The Reggae-tinged “Before it's Too Late” features a blazing violin solo and weaves the perfect blend of old and new, telling the story of pure love's last chance.
The songs of the Prelude EP will capture your heart, and lift your spirit, as you traverse on your own “Soul Journey”. Welcome to the next chapter in soul.
