A, muscian since childhood and pro racing car driver in adulthood, I began this album as a result of a challenge from a very young but streetwise recording engineer. One day after a session recording cover songs, he suggested that I record one of my original songs. I told him that I didn't write original music "I've tried but I don't think it is in me." His simple reply was "Well, maybe you just didn't look deep enough inside." Never one to set aside a challenge, I went to work on my first "real" song ever. The very simple but sweetly melodic tune "Dreambird" was the result. Like many artists, I felt that the best music would come out of my heart when writing and singing about life experiences, life inspirations that I've received from friends, and of course my passion...driving. But even those songs in "Rright on Track" that relate to driver's and the racing life, carry lyrics with great life messages; in the vein of great story tellers such as Harry Chapin.
Fortunately I was introduced to Tom Capek, tracking engineer and muscian extraordinaire. After hearing just some of my music, lyrics, and my emotional commitment to the messages in my vocals, he conviced me (easily!) to take the music beyond that of a storyteller with a guitar. His advice, and musical performances on the album inspired me to work even harder and to accept no compromises in the production of this music. In Tom's word's "The world has got to hear these Charlie Putman songs!" Tom is one of the best producers in this part of the country and agreed to co-produce this album with me. After the final mastering, his comment was "I am more proud of this CD than any project I've worked on." That was music to my ears.
Unflattering as I was afraid it might be, we shunned heavy reverb and compression in the recording and mastering. The result is a beautiful album that is sometimes described as fresh, exposed, or my personal favorite...REAL. Professionals, who listen to way too much music, have complimented the album for our use of layering of multiple guitars and keyboard to create texture and fullness in the songs.
I hope you enjoy the music, the lylrics, the emotion, and maybe even a few hidden life lessons as much as I enjoyed creating it.
