ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Deep River

“Far from his native land and customs, despised by those among whom he lived, experiencing the pangs of the separation of loved ones on the auction block, … feeling the lash, the Negro seized Christianity, … the religion which implied the hope that in the next world there would be a reversal of conditions, of rich man and poor man, of proud and meek, of master and slave. The result was a body of songs voicing all the cardinal virtues of Christianity – patience – forbearance – love – faith – and hope – through a necessarily modified form of primitive African music.” From “The Books of American Negro Spirituals” by James Weldon Johnson & J. Rosamond Johnson. Viking Press, 1925, 1926 & Da Capo Press, 1969.

Singing among the slaves was an activity of inspiration, motivation and protest. Some of the language of Negro Spirituals is coded in order for the slaves to communicate with each other. The slave master might understand this as the singing of his “happy slaves” or as religious devotion. The spirituals on this CD are a combination of hope and faith, defiance against enslavement and plans for escape. Some coded language in the spirituals:

1. Moses = Harriet Tubman or the one that will lead you away from slavery to the north.

2. Wade In The Water = Wade in the water to hide your scent from the bloodhounds; best to cross by rivers and streams to avoid detection.

3. Go Down Moses = Moses leading his people to freedom is a reference to conductors on the Underground Railroad.

4. Steal Away = a secret worship service or imminent escape from plantation.

5. The Gospel Train = tells other slaves that an escape on the Underground Railroad was imminent.

6. Sinner Please Don’t Let Dis Harvest Pass = Song of courage to those preparing to escape; remaining a slave meant losing your soul.

7. Deep River = Crossing over Jordan is a biblical reference to freedom. Deep River generally refers to the Ohio River, the boundary between the north and the south. Ohio was on the main line of the Underground Railroad.

8. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot = A favorite of Harriet Tubman, symbolized carrying slaves to
freedom. Be alert & prepared to escape as Underground Railroad conductors are arriving soon.

Deep River

» James Weldon Johnson & J. Rosamond Johnson, “The Books of American Negro Spirituals”. Viking Press, 1925, 1926 & Da Capo Press, 1969.

1. Moses (Moïse) = Harriet Tubman or the one that will lead you away from slavery to the north.

2. Wade In The Water (Patauger dans l’eau) = Wade in the water to hide your scent from the bloodhounds; best to cross by rivers and streams to avoid detection.

3. Go Down Moses (Descends Moïse) = Moses leading his people to freedom is a reference to conductors on the Underground Railroad.

4. Steal Away (s’esquiver) = a secret worship service or imminent escape from plantation.

5. The Gospel Train (le Train de l’Evangile )= tells other slaves that an escape on the Underground Railroad was imminent.= signale aux autres esclaves qu’une évasion par le chemin de fer clandestin est imminente.

6. Sinner Please Don’t Let Dis Harvest Pass (Pêcheur, s’il te plaît, ne laisse pas passer cette récolte)= Song of courage to those preparing to escape; remaining a slave meant losing your soul.

7. Deep River (Profonde rivière) = Crossing over Jordan is a biblical reference to freedom. Deep River generally refers to the Ohio River, the boundary between the north and the south. Ohio was on the main line of the Underground Railroad.

Be alert & prepared to escape as Underground Railroad conductors are arriving soon.
