Chase Garrett’s back with the second installment his hugely successful Piano Stomp concert series. Chase Garrett's 2nd Annual Blues and Boogie Woogie Piano Stomp features four of the most demanded leaders in blues and boogie woogie piano from around the world today! Prepare to be blown away as Mark Braun, Chase Garrett, Fabrice Eulry, and Carl Sonny Leyland hit the stage to bring you the best and biggest blues and boogie woogie show in Iowa City!
Utilizing two grand pianos and a rhythm section consisting of Brian Aylor on drums and Craig Dove on the upright bass, the house sounded reminiscent of the 1930′s and 40′s, when the likes of Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis and Pete Johnson otherwise known as “the boogie woogie boys” were popularizing this style of music at rent parties, Carnegie Hall concerts and other venues such as Jazz the Philharmonic while blues pianists such as Jay McShann, Leroy Carr, Big Joe Turner and later Otis Spann were playing in barrelhouses and juke joints across the U.S.
Mark Braun (Ann Arbor, MI) also known as “Mr. B” has studied extensively with legendary blues and boogie woogie pianists Little Brother Montgomery, Boogie Woogie Red and Blind John Davis as well as being deeply influenced by jazz pianists with strong blues roots such as Ray Bryant and Horace Silver. He has performed all across Europe, Mexico, Canada and South America, and has appeared on numerous National Public Radio broadcasts including “All Things Considered.” Mr. B is also the organizer of the annual Mr. B’s Blues and Boogie Piano Celebration in Ann Arbor, MI that attracts major figures in the blues and jazz world, many of which he has collaborated with, including Henry Butler, Benny Green and Monty Alexander.
Carl Sonny Leyland (Southhampton, England) Hearing Carl play takes one back to the rent parties and lowdown back alley juke joints of the early part of the twentieth century. Having initially been influenced by boogie woogie greats Albert Ammons, Meade ‘Lux’ Lewis and Pete Johnson, Carl later went on to fully explore the blues piano genre and has become an authority in early and obscure styles such as those played by Little Brother Montgomery, Cow Cow Davenport and Speckled Red. Carl regularly performs in festivals across the U.S. and Europe including the prestigious Les Nuits De Jazz et Boogie held each year in Paris and the West Coast Ragtime Festival held in California where Carl currently resides.
Fabrice Eulry (Paris, France) is a consummate pianist and entertainer who seamlessly encompasses boogie woogie, rock ‘n’ roll, blues, stride, ragtime, classical and modern jazz with heart and soul in everything he plays. He has performed throughout Europe, South Africa, the Middle East, the Czech Republic, the U.S. and Canada. Today Fabrice is heavily influenced by George Gershwin, Errol Garner, Earl Hines, Jelly Roll Morton, Teddy Wilson and Pete Johnson. He has produced hundreds of his own compositions, including movie soundtracks, piano improvisations for live burlesque performances and jazz orchestral works, but perhaps Fabrice’s biggest achievement to date was breaking the Guinness Book of World Records on November 19, 2005 by playing piano for over twenty four hours.
Chase Garrett (Iowa City, IA) has performed all across the U.S. and Europe alongside some of today’s best boogie woogie, blues and jazz pianists such as Axel Zwingenberger, Joachim Schumacher, Julian Phillips and Michael Keashammer. Deeply influenced by Albert Ammons, Meade ‘Lux’ Lewis, Otis Spann and Oscar Peterson, Chase’s playing moves seamlessly between boogie woogie, blues, jazz, stride and swing. Chase has dedicated himself to boogie woogie and blues piano and in doing so has begun producing a concert series in which he and four pianists from around the world will perform at various theatres across the U.S. in the blues and boogie woogie style of piano masters from the jazz age and early twentieth century. The series is set to premiere fall 2014.
This concert also featured a full band of local Iowa City, IA musicians including:
Dan Padley (guitar)
Craig Dove (upright bass)
Scott Symmonds (percussion)
"Chase Garrett’s heart beats for another century, but the boogie woogie piano man is determined to make strides in this one." - Hoopla Magazine
"Chase Garrett's hands arch like the spine of a frightened black cat as his fingers fly up and down the piano keys. He pounds away on the ebony and ivory, playing riffs, slides, and shuffles with precision. The smile on his face and the tapping of his right foot in a black and white Converse sneaker remain constant as the chords spill out." - The Daily Iowan
