ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Hi there. Welcome to my musical therapy. “Amateur Hour” is alive and well! In 2008 I started to make some recordings of songs I liked. Eventually, dragging my confidence out of the gutter - where it may belong, I won’t argue -I made an attempt at making up my own songs. The relatively honest efforts are on this CD. Just don’t hold your breath for the “In Concert DVD”. I wrote the songs here for me, I guess to kinda clear my head, so they may not be quite to your musical tastes. Tough. But I hope you enjoy some of them.

There’s a whole bunch of people to whom I’m grateful for their time and support over many years, their good humour, advice, and empathy etc particularly during the making of this. It’s all been greatly appreciated; #1 MJ (no, you..- this wouldn’t have happened without ya, alternately, you’re to blame! ); Jim, PatC, AidanMc, Liz, Liam, Colin, Michelle, Ade, PeteFitz, Tony H, Pat Mc!, the PLS guys, and Sarah. There’s many more but I’m just too old to remember everyone, duh! You know who ya are..
“Our Guy Joe” In Memory of Joe Byrne. Like many others, taken too soon....

Would I ever have wanted to learn how to play a guitar without hearing Steve Ray Vaughan, probably not. Would I ever have wanted to write a song without listening to Bruce Springsteen, probably not. Would I ever have started wearing make up and dresses if not for my first musical love, David Bowie..actually scrap that last one. It’s not happened..yet...but DB, I won’t forget those teenage years!! You got me through..

BS, John Hiatt, Bob Dylan, Paddy McAloon, Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Prince (you mad eejit ),Glen Tilbrook/Chris Difford, The Ramones, Talking Heads, John Fogerty, Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, SRV, The Beatles, XTC, Kate Bush, Marc Bolan, Tenacious D, Ian Hunter, Dusty Springfield, Sam Cooke, Elton John, Wilson Pickett, Jimmy Reed, Paul Simon, Nils Lofgren, Queen, Roy Orbison, Evan Dando, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Buddy Holly, Kevin Smith sir, Woody Allen, FFCoppolla, John Irving, David Lynch, Terry Pratchett, my beloved Everton FC Al Pacino, Uncut, Q and Empire Magazines....and many, many others, may your God bless you...you kept me sane (ish)...

Going Back - I didn’t like school. Luckily I had enough smarts to get by and transitioned to being a worker bee, where I flowered . In life there’s many times you’d like to go back and change something. You can’t. But you have to live with it in a way that you can learn from it, put it all behind you and move on. Very important. Often easier said....

Yes, He Hugged Me! – Straight up rendition of what happened when I met “The Boss”. He hugs really hard! Bruce Springsteen is just the coolest dude in the world...

Gentle Kid ...for Alex ...for the baby in the house...started to shave before he was 12, some baby!! This lad is the business. Thanks for the loan of yer room kid...you r-o-c-k!!..

Nothing But Soul ...for Amy ...2nd child, great outlook on life, special, special girl..

Tractor Boy..for Ben..my eldest, now 20(Gulp!) still as tractor mad as he was when he was 3!..a country boy at heart, don’t change son..an amazing journey watching this guy grow...

Mary Jane (Instrumental)..MJ? thank you sweetie! one to dance around the kitchen to ...

The Dad Song...for Dad’s everywhere..parenting is a hard, hard job...but the greatest gift...

No Tears In Blue Eyes...for Katie ..3rd child..she looked sad one day and I wrote this for her...she cried when she first heard it...so did I...but ,ssshh, don’t tell her....an Irish Angel..

Light...no idea where this came out of, and it should probably go back there..

Sarah, Don’t Be Sad – a friend of mine and his wife lost two potential little lives. I wrote this one Saturday afternoon, not knowing what to do to say how sorry I was to hear the news..

Nobody Plays (Rock and Roll Songs Anymore) – well, some do! Rock is becoming a dinosaur. I wish it wouldn’t...but each generation throws a hero up the pop charts (Paul Simon said that)...lets leave them to it..

An Appropriate Tune....when you’re told you had cancer (even a “minor” one), it makes you reflect hard for a couple of days. I wrote this on about the 3rd day after. The last verse is about omens, how they’re rubbish really and how we always look for a positive sign, no matter how strange...

Turning Into Elvis...I heard Bruce use this expression once, it kinda stuck in my head. Getting older, waistband getting wider, trying to stay young but failing miserably...says it all..

Like We Do In Kells – Apart from time in New York and London, I’ve lived there or thereabouts since I was 16. It’s home...the words are 99% true 

Ben, Amy, Katie and Alex..my greatest ever contribution to a major achievement, with love..
Mum and Dad, Angie, Joanne and Families – what a weird strange trip this has been..so far.. ...I’ll shut up now......
