Chamber music should be engaging: it should draw you in emotionally and make you want to remain in the moment.
Poet's Heart tells an emotional story, not just with words, but with the very fabric of the music. The EP begins with three art songs for tenor and various chamber ensembles, and tells the story of love found, then lost. Only You features a beautiful cello obbligato written in 7/8. A Lonely Offering Never Ends features a Shakespeareian-style sonnet set in counterpoint with harp. The Crossing expresses the anguish of the end of a relationship with a haunting horn floating over a string quartet.
The EP ends with String Quartet No. 1, which retells part of the story. The first movement, Agitation, expresses the frustration of A Lonely Offering, but now using the color palette of the string quartet. Similarly, Mourning (the second movement), is a reinterpretation of emotions The Crossing, depicting individuals from a procession of mourners, each with a uniquely personal expression of grief. The final movement, Resolution, shows the transformation of this grief into hope.
