ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Husband and wife team Christos Govetas and Ruth Hunter join up with guitarist Dave Bartley (of KGB) to create a collection of old Rebetika tunes from the 30's and 40’s. The superb recording quality and choice of tunes makes this cd a rare gem. Christos Govetas is well known in the US and Greece as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist and has several releases to his credit, including traditional music with folk groups Pangeo and Ziyia (both available at cdbaby) , and a Grammy-nominated recording with jazz-man Bill Frisell (The Intercontinentals). Christos got his start when he was bussing tables in a Boston Greek restaurant. He was called up on stage to sing and soon formed his own group Taximi which played Rebetika. Christos teaches Greek music at workshops around the country and was the recipient of the prestigious Northwest Folk Arts Fellowship Award honoring his cultural contribution to the Greek-American community.

Ruth Hunter is also well known in the Greek and Balkan music scene. She and Christos have a unique vocal blend that can only happen when two people have been singing together for many years. She sings and plays this music with sincerity and passion and has astonished her Greek audience with the authenticity of her presentation. You can also hear her on the albums "Rue Balkan" with violinist Ruthie Dornfeld and "Northern Borders" along with Christos and Dave (both also available at cdbaby!).

Dave Bartley plays mandolin, guitar, cittern, tambura and numerous other plucked instruments. He has also written scores of tunes, some of which are working their way into repertoires around the country. Dave is a force in the contradance world, playing with KGB, BAG o’Tricks, Close Call and Tricky Brits. Dave has studied and played music of the Balkans, accompanying the dance performance troupe Radost and playing electric guitar with Aegean View, as well as accompanying global songstress Gina Sala. He has been playing with Christos and Ruth since their arrival in the Northwest in 1996.

All three musicians currently reside in Seattle.

Rebetika started out as music of the Greek underworld around the turn of the last century. It has endured and become the music of the Greek soul, often referred to as “Greek Blues”, perhaps because of the themes which the music gives voice to. The songs deal with the timeless issues of love, heartbreak, drugs, jail, illness, exile and death. In spite of the heavy nature of those topics, Rebetika music also maintains an innocence and joy, a love of life and passion which transcend time and language.

Pasatempo
μπράβο! What a wonderful cd! Part of my family is from Smyrna and was part of the diaspora to Greece during the 1920s. I remember hearing many of the old recordings of rebetika at my maternal grandparents' house as a child. This recording comes the closest to what I remember of that music. ευχαριστώ...

remarkable...
This CD is remarkable in a multitude of ways. A Greek of the diaspora, Christos Govetas plays and sings rebetika among other things,
and if we judge from his work in "Pasatempos" in terms of substance, we would place him among the best interpreters of the old rebetika songs.

Songs of Tsitsani, Mitsaki, Vamvakari, Skarveli, Hioti and other,
that vary in style and interpretational requirements, are expressed in a way that surprise with the mood they create. Directness, austerity, simplicity and beauty, without make-up and other cheap tactics with which we have been consistently bombarded in the many years of the "resurgence" of rebetiko.
I would place many of Govetas' re-interpretations immediately next to the originals: "San apokliros Yirizo", "Kaike ena sholio", "Oso varia in' ta sidera", "O Boufetzis", and this urges us to focus our attention on our compatriot who lives in Columbus' country...

Another quality work
Congratulations on your new CD. Although I'm not an expert on the rebetika genre, the quality of the songs, music is apparent. Keep up the (always) good job.

From the source...
Christos is a direct connection to anyone interested in the soul of greek music.

Go straight out and but this one!
My advice: if you like classic Greek song go straight to Trehantiri and get hold of this CD... Greeks to whom I have played these songs have been visibly moved by them.

With so much of what is labelled ‘rebetika’ being little more than posturing and pretension I have developed an aversion to the term. Here, though, Govetas, Hunter and Bartley make the songs new again. The press notes describe this CD as a ‘rare gem’; it deserves to be an extremely well-known gem.

You guys never cease to amaze me!
I really enjoyed the tracks on the website and am looking forward to receive the actual CD. Your performance is very true to the original recordings and that makes it 100-times better to listen to!

Keep up the good job and hope to see more of the same.

Fantastic
A few years ago I was visiting my daughter in Bellingham, Washington and she took me to a concert featuring Ruth, Ruthie and Christos. I was very impressed and I totally enjoyed myself. I was able to get the "Rue Balkin" CD and my daughter got it autographed. But now CDBABY let me know about your new CD "Pasotempo Rebetika" and they sent me a copy. WOW, I have all three of your cd's and they are all I listen to. Thank you for your efforts and sharing your talents with me and I look forward to your next cd.Ed

An absolute must!
To all lovers and aficionados of Greek urban popular music, both rebetika and laika (or to all those who just like any good music): Christos Govetas and Ruth Hunter's new CD, O Pasatempos, is an absolute must. It is among the few rebetic revivalist Cd's (of which there are a plethora) which, I believe, truly captures the flavor and spirit of the music and songs, especially the latter rebetic/laika of the post WW II era. For me the "feel" of these songs lies not so much in the excellence of the instrumentation (bouzouki, baglama, accordion, guitar) but in the amazing vocal styles of both Christos and Ruth. Especially impressive is Ruth Hunter, whose vocalizations embodies the era so much truer than many of the big name singers of contemporary Greece ( with their lackluster wispy voices) who often started as rebetic revivalists. The somewhat "smokey" and "metallic" quality of the voice puts me in mind of the great Greek Jewish rebetic singer, Stella Haskil.( which reminds
me, I would've loved to hear their rendition of Stella's great hit, Bir Allah, on the Cd)
