Sounds Effortlessly Beautiful
Clare has an amazing knack to craft lyrics and melodies that float airily atop her graceful and unpretentious guitar work. I enoyed hearing her live when I was in LA and was extremely excited when her CD finally came out. Definitely worth checking out!

An Acoustic Angel
I'm a regular at a sushi restaurant at Universal Citywalk. I like to read a good book while I'm waiting for my food and to people watch while eating. There are often musicians playing nearby. I usually try to ignore it. While I applaud and encourage anyone to pursue their passion in music, I have no interest in Kenny G-like saxophone solos and schmaltzy piano ballads. (Sorry guys. Really, I am.)

So one day I sit down to eat and see a young woman nearby with an acoustic guitar whom I had never seen before. "Great!", I joyfully thought, "Her music will be easy to block out while I read!" But try as I might, I just couldn't ignore her. Her songs were just too good. And that voice....

It's getting harder and harder for me to find newer artists I like, but after 3 or 4 songs, I realized that whatever she's trying to say with her music, I got it. And you have no idea what a warm and wonderful feeling that discovery is. I bought her CD, White Bamboo, from her that day and it's been in a pretty constant rotation since then. It's a mostly quiet, acoustic album, delivered in a sort of musical whisper, with smart, sometimes biting vocals. I think one of my favorite opening songs lyrics is from Notions of Love: "I'll probably never tell you this: I've lied with every kiss."

Everyone has at one time felt so hurt that their heart feels like it weighs a hundred pounds or that Love is a concept meant for somebody else, but hearing Clare sing about it somehow makes it okay. White Bamboo is a gorgeous collection of reflective, angry, melancholy, sweet and touching songs that will bring a smile to your face even if just behind that smile there may lurk memories of sad times. That's her gift. She can turn moments of sadness into something beautiful.

Beautiful Voice
I first heard Clare at City Walk one night...I made the comment (before I saw her) that "This is the kind of music more venues should play...who is this?" My teenage son said "It's that girl over there!" The sound was so pure...I thought it was being pumped through a speaker system! I of course bought her White Bamboo CD and LOVE IT! There is something hauntingly beautiful about her voice...and it sticks with you. Now...I'm just waiting for more!

Watch this one!
I live in LA. Practically everyone I know is trying to "make it." So I go hear my friends play their music and act in their plays, and no offense to my friends, but it's rare that I come away thinking, wow, s/he’s really got it.

So when I ran into an old college friend singing at City Walk, I thought, sure, I'll buy a CD, support the cause…she sounds pretty good.

Little did I know, that Clare Means first album, White Bamboo, would quickly become one of my most regularly-listened to CDs. Before I knew it, Notions of Love was my MySpace profile song. I found myself humming Haunt You. I confidently took a friend to see her play live, knowing he would like her Suzanne Vega–esque music as much as I do. He did.

Check out White Bamboo. If you are lucky enough to live locally, go see her play live. You won’t be disappointed!

Sehr ausgeglichenes, stimmungsvolles, professionell produziertes Album. Mit wehmütiger, leicht verrauchter Stimme singt Clare Means über (verlorene) Kindheit und kaputte Beziehungen. In jedem Lied lassen sich eingehende Melodien finden. Für mich das (bisher) beste Debüt des Jahres.

Genuine Art
Lyrics that resonate with real life and a voice that is hauntingly comforting. This album is genuine art.

she's gonna haunt you.
White Bamboo is a gorgeous album of lovely songs and Clare Means is an amazing singer-songwriter with a hauntingly beautiful singing voice. Laid-back, gentle, sweet songs. Awesome guitar skillz too! Favorites: New York Nights, Asbury Park, Everybody's Room But Mine.

Truly talented musician, and a great album
This album has been in my cd player and itunes for months and never gets old. What an incredibly talented artist, musician, and storyteller! These songs are soothing, innocent, touching, and above all relatable. The lyrics and melodies are also exceptionally colorful and thought provoking. What an accomplishment to incorporate so much imagery in a song! This album and Clare's most recent "War for Love" are highly recommended.
