ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
How refreshing - how new to listen to this 2010 CD release of "music of the Qaria" . First released as a collaboration between Ibrahim Farrah and Rashid Music in 1976 and now on Orient reocrds /Global village this traditional music recorded in the Middle East , must have had a different effect and served a distincctive purpose In 1976 . But the years 1976, and 2010 do have some profound cultural simalarities. The Music of the Qaria, historic, acoustic, and musically/rhythmically rich complex, Introspctive,- today seems new in the sense of restoration and rejuvenation. It is a refeshing return.
The "Music of the Qaria" is an invavaluable seslection of music recorded in the villages of Egypt, Lebanon and Morocco. The first tracks represent the traditional village music of Egypt featuring mizmar beledis and tabla/riq/ and Frame drum solos. Other selections incluse Bedouin music using the mijwiz, rabab and finger cymbals (faqqashat). Interspersed with singing interludes and Moroccan Gnawi songs. This music -- old but new today, is as melodically, emotionally and rhythmically compelling as is it is rich and seductive. It is far more intellectually provocative, and sensual - than what has become the norm. The decibel endowed, now conventional Western-oriented, over used sonorities and 4/4 beat. It is creatively and culturally Imperative that music, such as "The Qaria is newly available to professional and students. It provides both a return to and for some a new consciouness of the viceral , organic, genuine musical exprssions which initially stimulated and sustained enthusiasm for Middle Eastern Dance.
