The Grey Areas album was born out a challenge to myself to write, develop and record a new piece for myself every day for the month of March 2012. The pieces found on this album were those that after days and weeks of refinement took the most shape and depth.
The impetus for these pieces developed from the observation that much of my work until this point had dealt mostly with strong con- trasts and large changes. Despite that I had had a number of musical successes writing in this manner, I felt stuck within my own devices. It struck me that this kind of approach borders on being anti-thetical to my values about life and art, and at the very least, was unbalanced. Out of this idea came the premise for Grey Areas, pieces that explore contrast through observing similarities and subtle changes, rather than relying merely on difference.
I dedicate this record to Lindy, my Aunt, whose passing occurred dur- ing the period that I made this project. She spent her whole life seek- ing answers to ideas like these, finding and sharing the great depth of her life.
Everything about this album is a labour of love. From the writing, playing and recording to the manufacturing. Enjoy.
