From MainlyPiano
"First Light" is a collection of eleven peaceful, soothing piano solos composed and performed by Craig Urquhart. Urquhart’s ninth release clearly demonstrates his mesmerizing velvet touch on the piano while providing a bit of musical tranquility and respite from life’s hectic pace. Gentle and intimate, each piece is an individual gem, but the album also works as a unified whole, with each piece flowing into the next without any jarring shifts in style or tempo. The music works beautifully in the background with quiet activities, but it is also complex enough to be consistently interesting with repeated focused listens. Urquhart has been one of my favorite artists since the release of "Streamwalker" (2004), the first of his albums that I heard, although his debut was "Songs Without Words" in 1990. A classically-trained artist who was Leonard Bernstein’s musical assistant from 1985 until the composer’s death in 1990, Urquhart brings a wealth of musical experience as well as life experience to his compositions and shares them by utilizing his unique musical voice.

"First Light" begins with “Contentment,” a warm and uncomplicated confection that exudes quiet happiness - a lovely start! “Hymn” is a bit more somber, but is still very gentle and soft-spoken. “In Memorium J.G.” is a favorite. Obviously composed for someone dear, tender sadness blends with feelings of loss, drawing in and touching the heart of the listener. “Summer Waltz” is wistful and bittersweet, moving slowly and gracefully, as if in a dream - another favorite. “Autumn Wind” moves calmly and gracefully with just a touch of mystery - an elegant beauty from start to finish. “Little Lullaby” has a gentle sweetness and simplicity to soothe sleepyheads of any age. “A Father’s Love” conveys strength as well as tenderness, grace and devotion. Poignant and deeply emotional, it’s another favorite. The title track beautifully expresses the calm and stillness of daybreak, gradually warming and becoming a bit more active as it evolves. “My Angel” brings this lovely album to a close with a moving love song that comes from the heart with deep sincerity and affection.

Craig Urquhart has created another solo piano masterpiece. Very highly recommended.

Reveiw excerpt from Music and Media Focus
Craig Urquhart has a deep belief in “the continuing renewal of faith in beauty and the healing power of music.” The first track on the album entitled “Contentment,” lives up to its name with a peaceful vibe and a simple melody. This quality in Craig’s music was recognized by someone with a far greater ear for music than I will ever have – the maestro, Leonard Bernstein, who noted that “it has a deceptive simplicity and honesty that is rarely to be heard in contemporary song-writing. His tonal approach is not merely “sincere” but genuinely moving, with a private beauty all of its own.” Craig’s playing has been compared to that of George Winston, and I can see that to some degree. Unlike some solo pianists whose style is very ornate and filled with as many notes as possible, Craig is able to express a range of emotions in a way that at times more understated, yet always elegant. This emotional expressiveness is beautifully portrayed in a composition called “In Memorium J.G. which I found quite touching as it flowed through various melodic movements contrasted with spaciousness.

One of my favorites, and perhaps the most moving was “A Father’s Love. This piece has a bit more thematic complexity than some and is enhanced by Craig feel for dynamics and velocity to create dramatic effect. One quality I appreciate in Craig’s composing and playing is what I would call a sense of melodic yin and yang, and knowing when to allow for space in the music. Overall there is an exquisite balance throughout the recording. I won’t say he “saved the best for last,” but the album draws to a close with a heartfelt and uplifting piece called “My Angel,” which I really enjoyed. While many listeners are familiar with Craig Urquhart from his numerous recordings and international concert performances, for those just discovering him, his new release is a wonderful introduction to this multi-talented artist. First Light illuminates the gifts of Craig Urquhart as a world-class pianist and composer of distinction.

The RajMan Review
Craig Urquhart’s latest album is a collection of gentle solo piano recordings that provide soothing relaxation.

The compositions are intricate and well-structured, demonstrating Urquhart’s creativity and mastery of songwriting. The tunes also exude reassuring warmth and tranquility.

Urquhart brings his beautiful compositions to life with tremendous performances that underscore the melodic lyricism in his music. Urquhart is a versatile artist, but his mission on this CD is to provide meaningful insight and serene introspection, and he accomplishes this with great success.

This album is proof of why Urquhart is not only a world-class concert performer, but also a highly sought-after composer for other musicians and singers.

Those who appreciate fine solo piano music will find much to praise about this disc.

REVIEWS NEW AGE

Calidez y equilibrio

Me gusta!.

Recomendable!.

Serge Kozlovsky

Writings by Serge Kozlovsky / http://sergekozlovsky.com
Light heals, dispelling mist,
All beings strive into the light
What can be said about the healing power of the music? It is able not only to heal but can arouse the spirit and give the human being the needed strength.
It can help attune the vibrations of the individual to the vibrations of the Divine Universe. You will easily feel yourself as an integral part of infinity, a part of God.
Craig Urquhart expresses deep emotional experiences in his piano compositions and creates beyond doubt a wonderful example of healing and meditative music. His tunes gently flow like a stream whose water sparkles in the light of the morning spring sun. And the music of Craig Urquhart is very warm and sincere, it originates from the bottom of the artist’s heart.
But these above-mentioned remarkable features of the new Craig Urquhart’s album do not fully describe it. Transparency is felt in the compositions of “First Light”. They all are very clear and full of empathy. Optimism is inherent in the music of Craig Urquhart. It motivates one to live and create. You become happy from the awareness of your presence in this wonderful world.
So, certainly listen to the “First Light”. There will be more harmony on our Earth with this music.
