ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Chad Crumm (Ithaca, NY), has just released a solo CD of new songs and instrumentals called, "Swimming Hole".

The project was recorded at Chad's own studio (the Music Tank), a 1200 square ft. renovated barn located just outside of Trumansburg, New York. The material is a departure from any previous recorded effort by Chad. "Swimming Hole" makes ample use of ambient noise, software synths, samplers, static loops, pitch shifting, usual and unusual acoustic resources and today's state of the art studio technology. Despite a busy patchwork of tonal color, rhythm and lyrics, the arrangments are refined, and unfold from first song to last with ease. The end result is a strange but cohesive set of beautiful songs .

Primarily known as a fiddle player, Crumm's "Swimming Hole" highlights his other abilities such as guitar playing, spoken word technique, lyric writing and engineering/production skills.

Chad's previous releases as an instrumentalist and songwriter include 2 records on Rounder from the 80's with the Chicken Chokers, 2 CD's on Tritone with the Hix from the 90's and numerous anthologies. He has written numerous pieces for theatre, film, dance and concert stage including,"Pink Angels" a concerto for double-barrel shotgun and orchestra. His engineering/production credits include the Old Crow Medicine Show (Eutaw), singer songwriter Jennie Stearns (Sing Desire), the Lonesome Sisters (The Lonesome Sisters) and many others.

Stunning productions and wonderfully creepy songs
It's as if the 'people' in the Nib Geebles artwork in the booklet had come to life and started chasing me towards the abandoned building on the edge of town...

a subtle combination of dirt, beauty, and wonder. Inspiring to all people who lov
Subtle, complex, beautiful
This cd is a real inspiration for all people who like to wonder, who ask inapropriate questions at the dinner table. Whenever I'm eyeing normal people and thinking maybe it's not so bad, that it's looks like maybe it could be ok, I just play Chad's CD and thankfully snap out of it.

Nice split of wild heart and gentle soul
I really like this record. last few tracks and "devil's grip" are brightest moments. Sometimes wild, sometimes gentle. Nice split of wild heart and gentle soul. You must feel it yourself!

CD Baby

Tom Waits fans will be ecstatic with this priceless, perfect junkyard pop that goes from tweaked out, carnival craze and slinky, mischievous, shadowy cabaret swamp to unusual scramblings of opera and electronics to clever anti-folk, folktronic romps through languages shared with Leonard Cohen, Peter Mulvey and David Byrne. Altogether, there's an abundance of intellectual spark, distinctive ideas winding around other distinctive ideas, spattered with wit, humor, insight and even irreverence. Swimming Hole is a trip through the eccentric and alternative that you won't soon forget.

Swimming to Rongovia
These songs are about a world more real than the so-called real world. Elements of traditional, pop and classical music have been liberated from their hide-bound contexts and drafted into the service of one man's vision. Each song unfolds like the recreation of a memory with all the abrupt transitions, bizarre juxtapositions, dark corners and sun-glint surfaces of a dream. Listen and you will remember too.

It pranced through the woods on little kitten feet!
Swimming Hole manages to go in several directions at once, without crashing. Beautifully conceived and executed songs clatter, scratch and sway. Chad’s singing has a conversational quality that manages to be both soothing and unsettling. These songs are a ticket straight to the subconscious of a barely-dressed America, and Chad is our guide. Uncle Chad will take you there. Step right up folks!

Robby Aceto

a compelling 21st century dust bowl song cycle
is beautifully imagined and realized. Depicts a rusty decayed landscape of post-pastoral americana. Raw, scratchy fiddles, russet banjo and swampy guitars co-exist with orchestral samples, finely articulated ambient touches and lo-fi textures. Chad Crumm delivers his slice of life poetics with a weary realism reminiscent of Tom Waits.A compelling 21st Century dust bowl song cycle. easily 5 stars and worth repeated listenings.

..amazingly cool.
Chad Crumm is a legend, and he should do film soundtracks. Hes got the feel and the knack and the ear and the sensibility and the art running thru him. This is art. When i got it i listened to it all day, over and over, and I still love it. Rock On! Record more stuff, keep creating. The production is awesome too.
