Cuillin Sound is a small, beautifully balanced woodwind trio consisting of three of Britain's leading woodwind players - flautist Lynda Coffin, clarinettist Sarah Watts, and bassoonist Laurence Perkins. They have performed in major venues in the UK and abroad, but have a particular enthusiasm for concerts in towns, villages and regions that do not have many opportunities to experience professional live classical music performances. Cuillin Sound is named after the beautiful land and seascapes around the islands of Skye and Raasay on the west coast of Scotland. The group's wide-ranging repertoire and relaxed performing style takes inspiration from many genres of music, from classical to arrangements and settings of traditional Scottish melodies.
'Cuillin Sound' CD was recorded in November 2011 on the beautiful Isle of Raasay, off the west coast of Scotland, overlooking the Cuillin mountains of the Isle of Skye. The venue was the island's Community Hall, and the recording was produced by Andrew Keener.
This is Cuillin Sound's first CD, and it includes first recordings of several original works for this combination, including the Liten Statymusik by Klaverdal, Divertimeni by Lorenzo, Serenade by Bozza and Trio by Koechlin. 'Classics' include the Beethoven variations on Mozart's famous opera aria "La ci darem la mano' (in the trio's own version, which includes clarinet in C), and the Sonata by Francis Poulenc. An original work (by the trio's bassoonist Laurence Perkins) written for Cuiilin Sound is 'La Follia' - a set of variations featuring Sarah Watts playing bass clarinet. An important aspect of the trio is the inclusion of arrangements of traditional folk tunes (in particular from Scotland), and on this CD we have melodies from the Shetland isles ('The Day Dawns') and the Hebridean islands ('From the Western Isles'), all in the trio's own unique settings.
