This CD was developed to provide hope to women living with vulvodynia, to support ongoing treatment and to diminish suffering.
In vulvodynia, as in other chronic pain disorders, complex changes occur in the affected tissue as well as the brain and spinal cord, which result in normally quiet nerves becoming sensitive and irritable to such an extent that pain can occur even in the absence of a harmful stimulus. Once this pattern is established, the changes in the nervous system, the original cause, the expectation of pain and the resulting tensing of muscles can create a powerful pain loop which may be difficult to interrupt or change, even after the initial cause has been found and eliminated.
Track 1 provides a brief introduction to vulvodynia and guided imagery meditation.
Track 2 is a guided imagery meditation. It was carefully developed with the help of women whose lives have been affected by vulvodynia and practitioners experienced in their care, including specialists from the fields of gynecology, dermatology, physical therapy, acupuncture and psychology.
Guided imagery is a form of directed meditation where images, messages and goals are communicated by a narrator in a state of relaxation and soft focus to the mind and body to produce desired positive responses and changes. It can be a powerful adjunct to medical or psychological treatment and you may want to consider giving this a try if you have been experiencing chronic pain in any of the tissues of the vulva or if you suffer from vaginismus. Its impact will be greatest when done regularly, and you may find this meditation particularly effective in times of stress, when feeling rushed, annoyed, frustrated, overwhelmed or tense.
It aims to lessen your suffering by increasing a sense of control, hope and motivation, while decreasing shame, isolation and the side effects of treatments. It does this by inviting you to relax deeply while imagining normal functioning of the tissues and processes that may have experienced changes. Because the meditation relies on a state of relaxation and self-hypnosis, please don’t listen to while driving or operating machinery.
If you are not familiar with guided imagery meditation, it is important to know that there is no wrong way to do this meditation and your unconscious mind will be in control at all times, taking in images that carry meaning, ignoring some and changing others as it sees fit.
Track 3 is a lullaby designed to invoke the sense of support and comfort elicited by the closing scene of the imagery, where friends and loved ones, practitioners and, if this is helpful to you, spiritual guides, are invited to join your healing journey. You can listen to this song when you only have a few minutes or right before falling asleep.
Track 4 contains affirmations, which you may find helpful in keeping you hopeful and motivated. They are designed to counter-act negativity and anxiety and can be listened to at any time.
Whether or not you decide to purchase this CD, please know that the authors of this CD understand your pain is real and has a profound impact on your life. We salute your resiliency and encourage you to honor yourself for the steps you take to heal and to be comfortable.
