Album Notes
What is the RETRO Experience?

It is a deliberate stylistic return to the sound of the mid 60's to mid 70's.

Beyond that, it is also a return to a style of writing that was quite common in that time period that to a much lesser extant exists today. You'd be hard pressed to find it.

Beyond even the above explanation, this is not a one song tribute to an "era gone by", or a one album tribute in the same vein, but a compre-hensive, multi-album return to that sound of the past.

A "sound", however, involves many levels or forms of the songcraft, all blended together; and when they are blended just perfectly, you get a certain sound that just cannot fail to attract the ear and remain on the brain for long after the song is done!

In fact, be forewarned! If you are into rap, hip hop and such, you will probably not find anything worthwhile in the RETRO Experience! To be honest, it is not designed for you. Your musical "palette" has been saturated and brought up with "audio junk food" for a long time and it may not be able to consume, well, audio "health food"!

This is not saying that you can't grove to it, but your less likely to enjoy it.

However, RETRO isn't about merely using an audio trick or instrument from a bygone era, (for instance, that lovely "Strawberry Fields" styled organ of the 60's) ...

It's also about re-capturing a style of song-writing that was highly preve-lant back then, that we just don't hear today. Lyrics with meaning and substance.

Does this mean that all of todays lyrics have no meaning? Of course not, but you have to look far and between, (at least in the big time record labels output) to find meaningful content.

There was a certain happiness, a loveliness to the past songwriting. Compare this ...

Why do birds, suddenly appear,

everytime, you come near?

Just like me, they long to be ...

close to you.

to this ...

I like big butts, and I cannot lie

you other brothers can't deny ...

Well I need not beat that dead horse further!

However, along with the lyrical beauty, I listened and studied the muisic of the past and have personally found that there was a certain brilliance in the chord progression and the overall construction of songs from the past. I listen to, "Come Saturday Morning" (by the "Sandpipers"), and I, in a very real way, suddenly get a chill going up my spine! Or, for instance, "Smile a Little Smile for Me (Rose Marie) (by the "Flying Machines"), or perhaps the else-where mentioned , "Cruel to Be Kind" by the fabulous Nick Lowe, and I can't help but be draw in with my spirit soaring!

Artists were either far more capable of writing a great pop masterpiece in the past or, the record labels got out of the way and let them write what was in they're heart instead of checking the latest demographics and de-ciding that this is what must be "in" this week and whether it's crap or not, shove it down the publics throat.

There are many influences behind RETRO. The Beatles, Electric Light Orchestra and Cheap Trick are the main influences, as well as a myriad of other bands, too numerous to name.

Why RETRO ....

I have personally found that every genre seemed to have reached it's "apex", it's purest form, in the mid seventies, (I'm sure that could be up to debate, depending on who you ask). This goes for all genre's, whether we are speaking of Country, Pop, Rock or Heavy Metal. By the late 70's, the different genres were beginning to "morph" into each other. The end product of that today is that we rarely hear any genre songs that seem to really sound like Country, or Pop ect. They are a hybrid of sounds.

The RETRO Experience is pure pop ... plain and simple.

With RETRO, I wanted to return to a sound that I grew up with. The 70's gets a lot of bad rap, (due to disco, ect.), but I also found that the best examples of the craftsmanship of music were during those years.

On RETRO, you will find a return to the soft ballad, the love song, as well as rambunctous rock songs that definitely sound as if they are taken out of time back then.

Therefore, I should hope that you enjoy the RETRO Experience.

and since you have read this far, (and I thank you!) here are the lyrics to "A Maerry Christmas"

A Merry Christmas, A Merry Christmas
(so) let's hang some Holly
for times oh so jolly!

A Merry Christmas, A Merry Christmas
(so) here's my gift to you!
A hug and kiss just for you.

Though times may seem oh so hard
We've made it through once again
... and we're stronger, in the end!

peace may seem such a dream
but baby, it's got to start with you and me
then (we'll) let that love spread, to the world.

A Merry Christmas, A Merry Christmas
Another gift for you,
I'll always be there for you!

A Merry Christmas, A Merry Christmas
So cmon you people,
embrace the good and not evil

Don't let the darkness reign
Overcome it with love not hate ...
Then we can sing, with one voice!

A Merry Christmas (X3)
