ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Drawing inspiration from classic jazz vocalists (Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald), modern-day chanteuses (Eleni Mandell, Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux), and denizens of the Los Angeles alt-country scene (Randy Weeks, Mike Stinson, Tony Gilkyson), with Charlie’s Lonely Sunday, her third album and first to be released on the Boronda Records label, Dafni presents a collection of 13 songs spanning a range of genres from the rockabilly hoedown of the opener “Dimes” to tracks featuring Latin (“Let’s Pretend”, “Lonely Sunday”), country (“This One Dance”, “Never Tell You Why”), Americana (“Broken Letter”, “Carried Away”), and jazz-tinged (“Complicated”, “Honey Honey”) grooves. Dafni’s band had grown so comfortable playing together during a year of regular performances that they recorded the basic tracks for all of these songs live—vocals included—in a single day at producer Charlie McGovern’s Big Ol’ Studio in North Hollywood (two of the songs were later rerecorded on another day—again live), providing the album with a consistency that captures the vibe of the band’s shows. In addition to 11 of Dafni’s original compositions, Charlie’s Lonely Sunday contains a Cajun-style cover of labelmate Tracy Huffman’s “Bottom of a Well” and a country romp—the saucy “Down and Dirty”—co-written with L.A. songstress Sarah Stanley.

San Luis Obispo New Times review
My new love

I love Dafni's new CD Charlie's Lonely Sunday so much I'm thinking of marrying it. Right now I'm cleaning the spit off it because we were making out a little while ago, but now I want to play it again and all that good makeout juice is making it skip.

The CD moves smoothly between swinging rockabilly songs like "Dimes" to tango-esque numbers like "Let's Pretend" to folky heartwrenchers like "Broken Letter" to oh hell, every song is a revelation. On my new paramour, I mean Dafni's CD, Dafni sings under the influence of classic jazz vocalists like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone (or, if you prefer, think Norah Jones or Madeleine Peyroux for more modern touchstones). It's just a super cool theme record about Charlie's lonely Sunday, I guess. Me likey! That's all you need to know.

Dafni (one name like Seal or Charo or Madonna) is a terrific singer who toured through town last year and is back again to play Linnaea's Cafe on Saturday, Sept. 15. She wrote to say, "I have a new record that I just finished recording with producer Charlie McGovern and I would love it if you could write a review on my new record in addition to mentioning my [8 p.m.] Linnaea's show."

I'm sorry, Dafni, but I don't have time to write a review. Your CD and I have eloped and we're leaving on our honeymoon. I think we'll be very happy together. Don't try to follow us. Our love is too strong to be broken.

In addition to Linnaea's, Dafni and Wil Forbis (lead guitar and banjo) will also be on KCBX's The Minstrel Song Show hosted by Sonnie Brown at about 2 p.m. and doing an in-store appearance at Boo Boo's around 4:30 p.m.

Listen Dafni, you can play your songs for your SLO shows, but your CD and I will be parasailing in Mexico. Don't hate your CD. It couldn't deny our mutual love anymore than I could.

AMERICANA JAZZ
Working in the tradition of jazz classics like Ella, Nina, and Billie, one-named Dafni has created a stellar new CD from which she'll draw for a 2 p.m. KCBX radio spot, a 4:30 p.m. Boo Boo's in-store appearance, and an 8 p.m. Linnaea's Cafe concert.

Uuuuh, ich mag Madeleine Peyrouxs Musik so sehr. Ihre CD "Careless Love" ist eine Klasse für sich… .
»I feel like I'm salin' away…

[[GOOGLE translation: Uuuuh, Madeleine Peyrouxs I like music so much. Their CD "Careless Love" is a class for itself ....
Now comes Daphni with her "Charlie's Lonely Sunday" CD, and therefore at times conjures up songs in the best manner Peyroux from her songwriting sleeves.
This version I like on the plate very well, but rolled Daphni this parallel is not as wide. On their third CD are still quite different beads.
It is capable of a wide range of Singer / Songwriter site to use and with a wonderfully relaxed competence.
In her cover version of Tracy Huffmann song "Bottom Of A Well" they even wander up to the Cajun.
Before she devoted to the acoustic guitar, were the piano, French horn and bass instruments. So they would have seen this album to a great extent alone can restore.
Meanwhile, the Wisconsin-born musician has a very good band, their performances on the impressive song for song can be implemented. It is really difficult, one of the instrumentalists to lift out. Nevertheless, Josh Bandur representative who plays the accordion, will be called.
Dafni has a lot of pots on the stove, should feel that they are in multiple genres, is at home: country, folk, and Latin songs, jazz in the rich are her hobby. Everything comes with a self-evident unwerfenden and diversity presented as if it were the easiest in the world.
The choice of accompanying musicians for their musical needs perfectly made. All are, nicely spread over the thirteen tracks their solo deposits and they play together in a breathtaking harmony.
The protagonist has to start her career in Los Angeles in the truest sense of the word hacking played their first and spores in open sessions in clubs deserve. Then a booking agent for a gig in Hollywood. Daphni had only five songs on the pan. They have to be convinced, as one hears her album to the present, one can only agree with the head nodding ... "Broken Letter", with Joshua Grange on the spherically-sounding pedal steel.
Loosely based on jazz is her "Complicated" or something fleet "Honey Honey". Here is Madeleine Peyroux greet.
The whole album sounds as if it were live in the studio or the.
Although Daphni on has a great voice, it provides the luxury of a song with Sarah Stanley to sing together. "Down And Dirty" is a beautiful country Schunkler and "This One Dance" is an example of how beautiful an acoustic and electric guitar can be complementary.
If Daphni with her songwriting remains as competently and shows her the musicians hold the pole, you need to the future of the artist not to worry. With many songs they always move at the top of the usually well-trodden path in the Singer / Songwriter profession.
It is the clever choice of instruments in each track provides a lot of spice and surprise moments.
Single is "Charlie's Lonely Sunday" that is not in any way and the album has a lovable-winning nature. Definitely you can not Daphni by the opener "Dimes" to categorize, because in the 49 minutes is so much in quality. To do justice to the album, is already duty to hear all the songs and finally, "Angeleno" one of the best tracks of the disk.
Every buyer can expect a great assortment of songs that completely deserve.
"I feel like I'm SALIN 'away ...." True, it takes a on a wonderful journey.
Uuuuh, Dafnis I like music so much. Their CD "Charlie's Lonely Sunday" is a class for itself.]]]

Collected Sounds online review
I reviewed Dafni’s previous releases, Red and Drifting in Circles back in 2005.

Those I recall being much more in the jazz realm. I’ve always appreciated Dafni’s ability to mix genres on her records without losing focus. She certainly does this here again.

Let’s Pretend has a Latin feel while much of the rest of the record is actually country or bluegrassy sounding. Some songs even have banjo! It’s not the kind of country you are probably thinking of though. It’s not Shania, it’s more Neko. More Western than what we think of as country. Like Old Country. When it was good. You know.

Dimes is a great opener, it just makes you want to get up and move to it.

Honey has a great rhythm and really shows off the way she trills her voice.

I also love Down and Dirty. How fun!

She has a really mature sounding voice that works equally well in all the styles she does. What I think would be great to hear is more torchy stuff from her. I think her voice would suit that genre too. Something like Cry me a River or Gloomy Sunday. Mmmm. But I am enjoying this muchly so I am happy.

I really enjoy all of Dafni’s albums, but I think this one is my favorite. So far anyway!

Etwa den Rockabilly “Dimes”, Latin Stücke (“Let’s Pretend”, “Lonely Sunday”), Country (“This One Dance”, “Never Tell You Why”), Americana (“Broken Letter”, “Carried Away”), und Jazz (“Complicated”, “Honey Honey”).

Norah Jones is the best known of the couple, Madeleine Peyroux, Eleni Mandell, and many others in the wake. Also Dafni, a young lady from California, is a vertolkster of this genre. On the cover of its CD Charlie's Lonely Sunday, there is a dreamy girl with curls, a cute hat and dressed in a floral dress, which look cool late apparently still to come. The songs of Dafni consist of a blend of country, folk and jazz. Here and there a pinch of rockabilly, cajun and even tango. The instrumentation includes pedal steel, fiddle and accordion. Dafni is not as talented as the aforementioned women and her voice sounds a little less smooth, but for those who want a small fifty minutes to refresh casual and elegant background music, this is a great CD.]]

[GOOGLE Translation: Until recently, she was just one of the many noble strangers to us, but fortunately it came with its fourth CD "Charlie's Lonely Sunday" recently. Fortunately, Dafni simply because it is a fantastic singer. With a few exceptions (Tracy Huffmans "Bottom Of A Well") in own material she elegantly a bridge between the worlds of classical jazz nightingale little as Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, contemporary successor thereof à la Madeleine Peyroux, Eleni Mandell and Norah Jones, typically with alt. country in the region again being enjoyed as Randy Weeks, Mike Stinson, Kip Boardman, Tony Gilkyson and Charlie McGovern. And that makes very pleasant results. Like Peyroux, Mandell and Jones also have a Dafni from the thousands of recognizable voice, which she limber for a variety of different styles pole dancing, while the coherence of its delivered a whole but also somewhere to harm. Opening Number "Dimes" flirt so strongly with rockabilly and cajun, "Let's Pretend" and "Lonely Sunday" get their value from open gestoei with sultry Latin, "Broken letter" and "carried Away" are successful thanks pedal steel and banjo contributions and Joshua Grange and Wil Forbis clearly be categorized as Americana, in "Complicated" and "Honey Honey", the jazz beast in Dafni as the upper hand and "Down And Dirty", "This One Dance" and "Never Tell You Why" loses they are in traditional country.

As a teenager she learned the acoustic guitar playing and when they left the nest and went to Los Angeles was her great love is the guitar. Without hesitation, she took part in the free stage at Sunset Blvrd. and soon she was discovered by agents. That they were readily detected no coincidence because listening to her 4th CD that I was the first I was just blown my socks.

Charlie's Lonely Sunday, everything, Country, Ragtime, Texmex, Argentine Tango and English waltz and all this with a jazzy undertone. Behind her a host of rasartiesten it is housed in the barn where Labotz Jake has his nest. With Dafni Boronda Records has a jewel at home to nurture and when you as the fourth CD this result should put a Norah Jones or even think. Who also has the snuitje Peter Holmstedt of the Swedish HEMIFRAN that gave us this CD.

The full CD is also dominated by the beautiful voice of Dafni and very nice accordion play of Jos Bandur. " Dimes is the opener and will all take the "swung" in the CD and outside a country rhythm, this song a bit of Ragtime in itself. In "Broken Letter", the accordion even replaced by the pedal steel of Joshua Grange. 'Down and Dirty "is my favorite straw of the CD and I have heard ten times in succession and I'm not tired. A catchy song about the love game of 2 loved ones. An English rolling brings Dafni with 'This one Dance' and stay there even when sitting still. Smooth ...

'Bottom of a Well "is the piece of the disc Texmex Dough Sahm was there heard this, he would certainly Flaco J. order in the repertoire as well. The part Argentine Tango brings Dafni with the Title Track of the CD ... "Lonely Sunday". 'Carried Away' is the part that was reserved for Ragtime favorites among us. With "What You Mean to Me 'I can not fail to dream away and also Katie Melua even in my thoughts. The last of the CD is' Angeleno 'and does Norah J even fade.

This four CD's I took honor Dafni ontekt have softened the pain if I do not have to wait too long to live it at work to see .... and now I put it the eleventh time and let's go down and dirty with this Greek Goddess!]]

Dafni has released some records before this and this new effort certainly has class. She records music that reminds me of Jolie Holland and others who make old time music seem new. "Dimes" is a fine example with a charming lyric and an accordion in tow. "Broken Letter" is a blue, true Americana with Dafni singing wonderfully. "Down and Dirty" is a humorous song with a nice instrumental backing. "Lonely Sunday" has a fabulous tuna and is a real standout song. Dafni's vocal charisma allows her to sound unhurried but determined as she sings of love.

Dafni's made another record she can be proud of and that should appeal to many listeners.

Dafni, 'Charlie's Lonely Sunday', is a charming girl that can't – or won't – decide on which kind of songs she wants to make: country, tango, waltz, cajun, jazz... And it doesn't matter. Accordion, violin, mandolin, contrabass and jazz guitar contributes to the variation.
