by Dave Thompson

Jazz Ears. Pop Head. Folk Heart. The nucleus is jazz trio, yet this grooves through worlds informed as much by post-Dylan confessional song as jazz improv. Accessible, eclectic, intelligent vocals to inspire tears and guitar playing to give you chills.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Dave Thompson: Canadian guitarist, vocalist, writer, recorder, arranger, producer.

Dave Thompson has made a career of being a guitarist-for-hire. Dave plays in the band of Juno winner Susan Aglukark, as well as with urban jazz soul singer Kellylee Evans.

Dave studied jazz guitar and composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and has played thousands of gigs in concert halls, festivals, summer resorts, clubs, musical theatre, radio and TV, as well as on many CDs as a sideman.

He released his latest CD “found. Wanting.” in 2007. In it there are echoes of Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, Sting, George Benson, and Lyle Lovett.

Some descriptions by others: “a smooth and sublime fusion” “so transparent and natural, it is like it was never recorded at all” with “brilliant lyrics, clean recording, warm voice and melodic guitar playing”, “delicate jazz guitar that dances at the right moments”, and “Found. Wanting is a terrific example of a Canadian artist making music for the love of the music.”

Produced, written, arranged, recorded and edited by Dave, and mixed with Ron Chilton, this album’s foundation is the archetypal jazz guitar trio. Yet the music moves and grooves through stylistic worlds that are informed by a confessional songwriting tradition, pop and standard songs, and jazz improvisation and arranging.

This is an accessible, yet eclectic performing and writing style: Intelligent, well-crafted music and lyrics, detailed arrangements and record production, and an intimate guitar and vocal style.

Wow!
I have listened to this CD many times over the past few weeks and every time I put it on, I hear something new in the songs. Dave is a very creative and inspired artist who has obviously dedicated much time and effort to producing a collection of songs that flow so well together. I really enjoy the guitar playing in particular, some excellent work and I look forward to hearing more!

A Superlative Record!
I picked up this disc at a live gig by Dave's jazz trio, thinking it would be the same sort of straight-ahead jazz that the trio was playing. But when I first popped the disc into the player in my car a few days later, I had to pull off the road just to sit and listen! It's not just jazz; it is a smooth and sublime fusion of styles -- jazzy, bluesy, folky -- that works as a beautiful canvas to showcase Dave's talent as a songwriter, lyricist and player. "found. Wanting." immediately became my favorite record, and has remained so for months, now.

Dave's work as embodied in this record comprises some of the best writing, playing, recording, mixing, producing and lyric composition I have ever heard. The recording quality is so transparent and natural, it is like it was never recorded at all -- like the music is playing inside your own head or drifting by on the breeze. What a perfect antidote to the over-compressed, over-processed recording style that has become commonplace nowadays! If it is possible to wear out a CD by repeated playing, this is the one record in my collection that I'll have to replace. And I would -- again and again.

Great collection of songs by a talented experanced musician
"Found. Wanting" is a terrific example of a canadian artist making music for the love of the music. I wont bore you by explaining the different tunings or the exellent craftmenship shown on this record but ill just plug it as good music played by a good musician. As an guitarist my self i admire the work shown on this record, "Found. Wanting" So ill leave you by saying a review cliche. If your looking for well crafted songs by a great Canadian musican you wont be "found. wanting"

Brilliant!
The thing I love about Jazz is the virtuosity of the players, and what I love about folk music is the honest, heartfelt content of the lyric. This was a great find for me. Music / Lyrics / and Songwriting that I can connect with, but performed with a polish and creativity not often found outside of Jazz. I hope to catch Mr. Thompson live soon.

found. Wanting.
What a warm surprise to hear an album shoot out from nowhere and catch your ear and your heart with such force! The entire album paints such a clear picture, both individual songs and collectively as a package. Old Roads flows like a paint brush over a canvas while also stirring brilliant flashbacks for many a listener who has had NUMEROUS summers in the sun moving place to place WITH FAMILY. The combination of delicate jazz guitar that dances at the right moments with masterful lyrics keeps you wanting more. Always needed in this day and age is the powerful passion that Dance Tonight brings. A smile of sheer confidence in knowing you are with the "RIGHT ONE" and who cares what else happens. This album takes me away...and isn't that want we want from artists...a chance to take a break from the daily grind! Thanks for that Dave Thompson.
