David Scoggin: "I tried to make an album that I would want to listen to many times if I were the listener. I like music that has a good balance of composition and improvisation. I love sharp contrast and surprises as music progresses. I want music to move me with beauty, excitement, unpredictability, and poignancy. I love dense jazz harmony and a wide variety of grooves with a special place in my roots for funk and R&B.
Some of this music is a throwback to fusion from the 1970s and '80s and Acid Jazz that began in the 1990s. I loved classic fusion albums by Weather Report, George Duke, Steely Dan, Clare Fischer, Jeff Beck/Jan Hammer, and Herbie Hancock's HeadHunters. My love for post-bop greats like Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal, and Miles Davis shows here as well.
There are lots of great players on Pan's Meadow, mostly living in Southern Oregon, and I'm fortunate to have them for musical comrades and friends. Particularly, I could not have made the same CD without the solos of Michael Vannice on saxophones. "
