"An international palette of musical mysticism ... intoxicating ... expansive vistas of heaven" where "listening is almost like flying." -AMG
"Limitless space ... a floating ascension ... continuously expanding, ..... she moves you beyond into inexpressible emotion..." -Anna Turner, Hearts of Space
"Om Mani Padme Hum" is a spreading, swelling circle, which becomes a majestic, wheeling rotation around a hushed sanctity. The circle lifts into a spiral, the music ever rising through the center to unfold, until you are left open and spacious." -Anna Turner, Hearts of Space
In "God Is", the organ pulls you out into a limitless space where you begin a floating ascension, continuously expanding, lifted by the power in Constance's voice until you think you have gone as far as you can possibly go. And she moves you beyond that into inexpressible emotion that is but approached by the word remembrance." -Anna Turner, Hearts of Space
"Demby draws from an international palette of musical mysticism album. Meditative drones from twanging tamboura, noble organ chords, shimmering waves of the hammered dulcimer, and cello overtones overlap to create sonic tapestries, heady settings for seven chants and prayers sung by Demby.
The Tibetan chant "Om Mani Padme Hum" offers intoxicating layers upon layers of sounds and voices. The Chinese-flavored "Peace of God," with lyrics by Annie Besant, dances suspensefully between the flittering of the hammered dulcimer and the deeply resonant twang of the Chinese cheng (a koto-like instrument). The Chinese mode is employed again on "El Mie." The "St. Francis Prayer" brings words above the plateaus of the hammered dulcimer. The devotional "Sant Ji" brings in just a touch of synthesizer sweetening to create expansive vistas of heaven; listening is almost like flying.
The multi-instrumental Demby plays all the instruments and sings, and the sonic effects are quite an achievement for the synthesizer and overdubbing technology of the time. What makes Skies Above Skies so enduring is Demby's sensitivity toward the "live" sonic vibrations of her voice and instruments and her alignment with the sentiments of the holy prayers. It is like the nectar of profound innocence." - AMG
"My God -This lady is amazing. Words cannot come close to describing the experience that is Constance Demby. Space/Ambient/Classical are put together for a spiritually mind altering journey. Nobody in this genre of music has reached this level, and I've listened to pretty much all of them. I love artist's like Roach, Budd, Eno, Rich, Wild, Unis, etc, but Constance has an inner vision that seems to be slightly more far reaching. Do yourself a favor, give this a listen, you'll know what I'm talking then, and only then. " - Reviewer: Robert Tisi -
"....I have listened to it many times - without it ever beginning to go stale. It is some of the highest music produced on earth, at any time." - R. Davidson
".....When I was in the hospital with a heart condition, SKIES ABOUT SKIES literally saved me" - S. Thimms..
