"Jennifer Faust and Brian Kunkel are Denim Wedding, a rustic Americana duo that, remarkably, stands out in a crowded field of local rustic Americana bands. Denim Wedding's new EP, Fancy Diving, is dreamlike and succulently earthy, a collection of five subdued but provocative tunes that range from upbeat Southern soul ballads ("Ankles Off") to delicate bell-and-accordion songs ("Ebb and Flow") to haunted dirges ("Traveling Circus"). While the music Faust and Kunkel sometimes make is spare, it is never stark, and it's imbued with a warmth that's impossible to fake. Fancy Diving's utmost strengths, though, are its songs, which are adventurously written—and impeccably dressed, even if Denim Wedding's name might make you suspect otherwise." NED LANNAMANN- Portland Mercury 1/23/13.
Jennifer Faust and Brian Kunkel met at the now closed venue The Woods, in Portland,Oregon during the fall of 2009. Soon after, they began performing Jennifer’s solo material both locally and on tour, but the project quickly evolved into more of a collaboration and was renamed Denim Wedding. Though Brian and Jennifer often perform as a duo, the project also includes a revolving roster of bassists, percussionists, and other musicians. Their overall sound can be described as “lush Americana”- powerful lyrics, rich vocal harmonies, and melodies cradled in the effect-driven arms of some heady guitar maneuverings. The music has a warm, cinematic feel to it- comparisons can be found in bands such as Cat Power, Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings, and Beach House.
*To the Moon was recorded/engineered by Josh Mathys, and drums on that track were performed by John Stewart. Jon Willams added hand claps and wine glass vibrations to Travelling Circus. Hands of Tuesday Faust and Jessical Blount were also clapped on said track. Anthony Ward added some drumming and coins to that track as well. Thanks to them all!
