Dewotta Gossett is a woman on a mission! The mission to "bring light into a dark world" is being accomplished through her ministry of song and through her Christian company, Unity in Christ. Unity in Christ helps others who are interested in ministering through the Arts.
Her debut CD released January 2003 entitled "Mission The Mission" is a compilation of songs written by Dewotta from her life experiences. This inspirational CD encourages the hurting, hopeless, and helpless with the affirmation that God is the truth and the light no matter what disappointments one has in life. Her love for God and her journey through life is felt when you hear her sing. You can hear samples of her music at www.dewottagossett.com
Dewotta was born in 1977 in Waycross, Georgia to Debra Ann Moore and Michael Wayne Moore. This quiet and shy child's gift of music manifested itself before she was three years old. Emulating the church services she attended Dewotta would 'play church' at home with her younger brothers and sister by writing songs, singing and directing as her teddy bear 'congregation' looked on. "My dad helped me develop an ear for music while my mom was my cheerleader encouraging me to develop my gifts that God gave me," she says. Playing the recorder while in elementary school and training herself to play keyboard and drums helped her sharpen her musical gifts. As a shy and quiet 14 year old, Dewotta realized that God could empower her to accomplish anything when she auditioned for a show and made it. Her musical and acting careers were well on their way!
Dewotta's life took a dramatic turn when at 15 she left the United States with her military family to live in Japan. Living in Japan her high school years exposed her to different types of music and gave her the opportunity to further her passion for acting. Starting a youth choir, singing, directing, writing, acting in school plays, the discipline she received as a member of the ROTC Marines, and her solid spiritual background has helped to mold her into the composer and recording artist she is today.
Hard times came during her college years. Dewotta met her husband Navy man Welton Terrance Gossett, while attending college at Hampton University in 1997 with a major in voice. However, college was put on hold when she had their son, Terrance Donte Gossett. Being a newlywed, a new mom, and moving to a new city, Dallas, Texas, in 1998 to be close to her husband's family almost wiped her out. "Everything I wanted to do was put on hold," she says. "I was homesick and depressed trying to adjust to being a wife, mother and living in a new environment. Just driving in the Dallas traffic was a challenge for me!" But by embracing the opportunities and challenges of that season, Dewotta's faith in God was stretched and strengthened. The Lord had a plan and purpose for her life and in 1999, despite many set backs, the Lord impressed upon her to further her singing ministry and composition of gospel music. This once shy and quiet girl has blossomed into an ambitious CEO, businesswoman, student (majoring in business administration), actress, composer, and gospel-recording artist who knows that her mission in life is to boldly spread the kingdom of God through a life of ministry in music. Watch and listen as her mission unfolds!
