ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Editor's Notes:
The piano pieces by Beethoven in this recording are among my favorites to teach. I have arranged them in approximate order of difficulty, but this undoubtedly varies according to each student's particular strengths and each teacher's opinion. My goal was to select a group of pieces that would span many years of a student's progress and to offer a variety of styles and forms in which Beethoven was such a great master. I have also compiled and edited these same pieces into a book, "Beethoven: Selected Works for Piano for Intermediate through Early Advanced Grades" , (GP378), Neil A. Kjos Music Company, Publisher. The book is available through your local music dealer.

I hope that your students enjoy these pieces as much as mine do.

Sincerely,
Keith Snell, Producer

Artist Notes:
Pianist Diane Hidy made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1991 after completing her studies with John Perry and Leon Fleisher. In 1987 Diane was the first woman to become a Fellow of the American Pianists Association and in 1982 was the winner of the MTNA Collegiate Artist Competition. She has performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra s First Prize winner of the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition. Diane attended the Juilliard School of Music, and holds music degrees from the University of Southern California and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She spent her high school years in Seattle, Washington, where she was a student of Michiko Miyamoto.

Diane and her husband, J. Tony Smith, live in San Francisco, CA, where she teaches young beginners through advanced high school students and adults.

Album Notes:
The popular works of Beethoven featured in this album span most of the composer's compositional career. The Six Variations on a Swiss Song date from the composer's early years in Bonn, while the Bagatelles, Op. 119 (published in two segments in 1820 and 1822) are among his last works for the piano. The Sonatinas in G major and F major were found among Beethoven's papers after his death and were published posthumously. Four of the works in this collection date from 1795/6. The Variations on "Nel cor piu non mi sento" are probably the result of Beethoven attending a Viannese performance of Paisiello's opera La Molinara in 1795. This popular melody also provided inspiration for composers such ans Bohm and Hummel. The Rondo in C and the Op. 49 Sonatas were written in 1796, although the Sonatas were not published until several years later. If the Rongo is encountered less frequently, it can be stated with certainty that one of the most often performed of all of Beethoven's 32 Sonatas is the Op. 49, No. 2. The second movement of this sonata appears also in the Septet, Op. 20 for violin, viola, clarinet, horn, bassoon, cello and double bass. This delightful work, seldom heard today, was one of the composer's most popular works in his own time. The title of the famous Für Elise most likely results from a misreading of Beethoven's handwriting. Written on April 27, 1810 for Therese Malfatti (the Op. 78 Sonata is also dedicated to her), this piano piece for Therese has become known universally as For Elise.
