Dick Fregulia’s Bill Evans Tribute Trio was born September 15, 2010, to honor the great jazz pianist 30 years after his death on that date. With Fregulia on piano, Piro Patton on bass, and Bill Moody on drums, the trio performed three sets at Caffe DiVino in Sausalito, moving sequentially through the style and spirit of several distinct periods of the Evans trios. The evening was a great success and the trio committed to extend the tribute.
Fregulia, a Bay Area jazz pianist who came of jazz age with the emergence of the original Bill Evans Trio, has maintained a local musical profile playing restaurant solo gigs, small jazz groups, accompanying singers, and holding the Thursday night piano bench at Washington Square Bar and Grill for 35 years. Drummer Bill Moody played internationally for years before settling into Sonoma where he taught at Sonoma State and continues to write jazz mystery novels. Piro Patton, the youngest of the group, is a devotee of Scott LaFarro and plays in a variety of groups. He is a graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music and a successful professional photographer.
Fregulia’s piano can be heard on several cd’s that are available on cdbaby.com under his name. The goal of the Tribute Trio is to re-create the style and spirit of the Bill Evans Trios rather than to duplicate the original arrangements, and to ultimately honor the legacy of the Evans trio in the history of piano jazz.
