ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
From the moment Diggsville took the stage, their eclectic sets of funky lounge groove and downtempo mix put Bay Area bookers and fans on their ears. Evoking musical effects of Portishead, Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps and St. Germain, Diggsville's lush female vocals, dreamy keys, enigmatic samples, funky bass, driving drums and wild sax unite for a uniquely seductive blend of retro and contemporary elements.

Diggsville began as a musical entity while contributing to the soundtrack of the independent film, "In the Wake" by Erica Jordan. After cruising the festival circuit, percussionist Randy Odell and vocalist Karen Mitchell enlisted the piano skills of David von Holder. His rich synth textures and poignant melodic sensibilities provided the perfect complement to Randy Odell's timely grooves, both coming from a strong jazz and R&B background. Bassist David Hermocillo drives it to the ground and saxophonist Nadine Whitfield adds subtle soul to the evocative lyrics and haunting vocals of Karen Mitchell for an extraordinary sound, drawing upon influences that include hip-hop, electronica, slow-core and jazz. Diggsville is satiating music junkies everywhere with substantially captivating grooves.

Very hip, cool sonic melange
Although the Massive Attack and Portishead influences are evident early on, continued listening of "Songs from Nowhere" reveals more than just those two nuggets of flavor melded with cool jazz. Imagine what would happen if Sade's band were to discover trip-hop and you'd have a notion of only one of the sounds to expect from this CD. There are hints of latin jazz, calypso, even R&B, all seasoned with healthy dashes of trance/trip-hop and sax licks. Vocalist Karen Mitchell sails over the top of a rock-solid rhythm section on every track (e.g. "Gotta Get up"). Keyboardist David von Holder's textures are expansive yet clear, especially on the Rogers and Hart classic, "My Funny Valentine." Although Nadine Whitefield plays tenor sax on most tracks, she really shines when she picks up her soprano ("Down at the Beach"). Sometimes, Diggsville just wants to show that they can groove, as demonstrated on "Angel." This CD is a wonderful experience! Please note that the titles for tracks 7 and 8 are switched.

Mystery & Beauty! I love this CD!
Diggsville music could easily fit the sound of an noir movie; deep, melancholic, sedate, but yet filled with a tension that is released through the vocals.

Arwyn Moore

A multi-layered nonconformist listening experience!
Lyrics that are incisive yet poetic, vocals that are haunting and
distinct, music that is dynamic and smooth.

Lush and Evocative. Like a deep cool stream. Dive in and let it carry you down....

Surreal at times and jazzy at others, this CD is totally enjoyable.
DIGGSVILLE: songs from nowhere. Weaves an ethereal tapestry of sound and emotion. Surreal at times and jazzy at others this CD is totally enjoyable. I had the pleasure of listing to this CD while traveling into San Fransisco over the SF Bay Bridge: A perfect fit!

Janice

mesmerizing...haunting,Karen's voice is totally incredible
I keep listening to it over and over and get drawn in deeper each time...like the above reviewer said, it's like auditory film noir. Retro combined with hip attitude edginess...can't really describe the sound, all I can say is that it's like nothing you've ever heard before.

Erica Jordan

Diggsville takes me where I want to go!
One of the most sexy and evocative CDs to be produced in years!

Definitely worth the time and the listen!
Diggsville completely draws you with a sound that haunts your head. Karen's vox are captivating; while the strident combination of bass-and-drums effectively drives a smooth and tantalizing groove right through your brain cells. There are serious songs on this CD that absolutely turn your head every time you hear them, and yet they're immediately accesible to anyone who'd take the time to listen.
