The Dirty Urchins were conceived around 2:30am at 11th St. Bar in the East Village of NYC, some Wednesday in late February, 2009. David and Freddie were on Guinness number several, having a symposium on the subject of their (grim) economic futures, which conversation went something like this...
FREDDIE: God, I'm so f*cking broke.
DAVID: Cripes, tell me about it.
FREDDIE: I'm gonna have to get some sort of bar job or something pretty soon.
DAVID: No, screw that, we're musicians, not aspiring service industry professionals! Let's put together the most killingest busking band ever and deftly avoid the evil specter of The Day Job.
FREDDIE: You think we can do that!?
DAVID: Hells yeah. You sing some of your tunes, I'll do some of mine, we'll get my friend Bennett to play bass and sing, and we'll easily achieve world domination with our deep-pocket grooves and tight three-part harmonies.
FREDDIE: Ok, I'm in. Subway tomorrow?
The following morning, through a foggy haze...
DAVID: Hey Bennett, you want to come busk in the subway with me and Freddie?
BENNETT: Who's Freddie?
DAVID: You haven't met him yet. But he's a great guy all around, and you won't be disappointed.
BENNETT: Ok, later bro.
Yea, did the three lads meet on the L-train platform, and they played for the people, and it was so. And lo! did the people drop money into the hat, and it was good.
Upon emerging from the bowels of the MTA subway in the evening...
FREDDIE: My god, we're like a bunch of Dirty Urchins!
And so, we were born.
Right about now, you're browsing the page of our sophomore effort, Late As Usual. All songs on this record are original compositions except for two, which were originally composed by Sam Cooke and Little Walter, whom we love dearly. We recorded and produced it ourselves. Furthermore, each physical album was personally assembled with our dirty little mitts and a pantload of love. For this effort, we believe that we deserve a big plate of cookies, or perhaps your enthusiastic purchase of either the CD or the ethereal digital version—or perhaps both! So come on now, get with it, and show us your love!
