Album Notes
On "ANOTHER COUNTRY" singer songwriter Caroline Doctorow showcases her "velveteen voice" while singing the extrodinary songs of 1960's folk icons Mimi and Richard Farina.
Expertly produced by the highly sought after multi -instrumentalist PETE KENNEDY, this recording boasts several stellar guest artists including NANCI GRIFFITH, JOHN SEBASTIAN, MAURA KENNEDY, HAPPY TRAUM and ERIC WEISSBERG.
Electric sitar, dulcimer, banjo, mandolin, and swampy sounding guitars provide a lush and driving backdrop for Doctorow's wondrous voice as it wraps around Farina's dark lyrics. Lyrics which are somehow still on the cutting edge of today in their unflinching, even ruthless examination of relationships between lovers, nations and cultures.
Another Country"is the firsts full audio retrospective of Richard Farina's long neglected catalog.

"Caroline Doctorow's penchant for crafting descriptive narratives comes naturally. The daughter of author E.l. Doctorow, she has released six albums that spotlight her ability to meld astute observations and genuine folk finesse. It's fitting, then, that this latest offering should find her paying tribute to the dean and queen of American folk music, Richard and Mimi Farina. With a stirring vocal that recalls Sandy Denny, Joni Mitchell, and Judy Collins, she takes the Farinas' timeless tunes and delivers them with a grace and eloquence that's pure and profound. Nanci Griffith, John Sebastian, Eric Weisberg, and the Kennedys are among the hired hands, but ultimately Doctorow deserves the credit for a knowing concept and ideal execution..."

"The truly astonishing thing is nobody has done a full album of Richard Farina's songs. Caroline Doctorow here tackles 12 Farina gems. Pete Kennedy is as much album enabler as producer; he plays multiple instruments throughout. Nanci Griffith and Maura Kennedy along with Pete lend voice to several songs. Two recorded in Woodstock feature Happy Traum, Mark Dann, Eric Weissberg and John Sebastian. The performances are assured and loving. Caroline's rich, warm voice fit's the songs exquisitely. Pete's arrangements, while usually not too dissimilar from the originals, still add subtly inventive textures. "Bold Marauder" and "Morgan the Pirate" sport electric sitar. "The Ouiet Joys of Brotherhood" employs a field recording of crickets wonderfully. Small gripe: I wish the backing voices were a bit further up in the mix.
You can't fault the songs; Richard Farina's songwriting was brilliant. Bad he not died so young, what he might have done is unlimited. If you have never gotten into Farina's songs, Another Country is the perfect introduction. If you already know Farina's work, you will love how Caroline Doctorow and company do them..."

“Doctorow has captured the stark beauty of Farina's lyrics and melded it with her stunning vocal performances and the incredible chops and co-production of highly seasoned and much-sought-after instrumentalist Pete Kennedy...”

“ANOTHER COUNTRY” is a masterful pairing of Doctorow's voice, which is ideal for these songs, with the brilliance of Kennedy's production and guitar work...”

"For Ms. Doctorow, making "Another Country" has closed a cirle whose tracing began in her girlhood..."

"Finding and reviving a lost voice of the 60's..."

Beautiful Sound
Hearing these songs for the first time brings one back to the days of Pentangle and Fairport Convention, however Caroline's vocals and Pete Kennedy's playing makes for an extraordinary mix and a wonderful updated sound. The songs may have been written in the sixties, but they are interpreted hear just wonderfully. Anybody that's a fan of that era and loves a beautifully crafted vocal will love this cd.
