ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
It’s been a good few years since Donie Carroll first started plying the balladeer’s trade in Bridgie Halloran’s of Ballygarvan. And he’s now living many miles away from his native Douglas, having relocated to New York about two decades ago. But Donie’s still got the mellow voice, laid-back good humor, and stylish way with a well-loved song that have made him one of Cork’s leading musical ambassadors in the United States.
Based in Sunnyside, Queens, Donie is a musical fixture at Murphy’s of Skillman Avenue, as he has been at other distinguished Big Apple watering holes, including the Grandstand in Maspeth and the late, lamented Kate Kearney’s in Manhattan. He’s also been making forays into the American South, performing and recording with the Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra, and making the
occasional theatrical outing with the Irish Repertory Theater.
As a shameless miner of nostalgic gems, Donie shares with his old pal Jimmy Crowley a taste for almost-forgotten songs that charmed past generations of Irish music lovers and are ripe for revival. But he’s also got a keen ear for more recently composed numbers from contemporary Irish songwriters. This new collection, a sequel to Donie’s well-received solo debut Down the Slippery Gap, is a great mix of old and new songs, once again graced with the multiple talents of musician, recording engineer, and producer Gabriel Donohue.
