Album Notes
I have literally been playing guitar since I was old enough to hold one.
I have always loved guitar instrumentals, I grew up on the Ventures, Duane Eddy, Chet Atkins,
Lonnie Mack, Arthur Guitar Smith, BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins,
and every other great blues, country or surf guitarist I could find. This CD represents
a lot to me and I put a lot of time into writing the songs because I want them to stand the test of time
like my mentors. Each song was played and refined for several months before recording them
in one take with no overdubs. I feel that if you can't play it you shouldn't record it.
I hope everyone enjoys this CD as much as I did making it. I am more proud of this than anything
I have ever done. I have played in bands all my life. when I moved to Austin I played in several bands
including Rocky Erickson, Leroi Brothers, Tailgators, Big Guitars from Texas(grammy nominated)
I have played all over the world(at least the top part) never got to Africa or south of Texas but I've
played all the european countries, Scandanavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and every little town in the
USA that was big enough to have a music club. So please check out the music I'm hoping that
you'll love it as much as I do

The Definitive Don Leady
Don Leady's new album Hillbilly Boogie Surfin' Blues is exactly the album his audience has been waiting for. Fans of The Tail Gators and the Big Guitars From Texas Trash, Twang & Thunder album have already decorated their collections with the 2000 Jazz/Western Swing masterpiece Alamo Suite. For the first time Don has released an all instrumental album that showcases his Hillbilly Boogie pickin' front and center. Recorded with no overdubs other than Don playing bass himself he storms full throttle through the Rockabilly, Country, Blues, Surf and Cajun influences that he has brought together under one roof for decades.

The album opens with "Bull Doggin' Boogie", which was first heard on Trash, Twang & Thunder back in '85. Those who are entering the musical world of Don Leady for the first time with this disc will wonder how and why there were four guitarists on that recording; Don's single guitar here covers all the bases.

"Crazy Link" is a nod to none other than Link Wray. Like Link, the simplicity is the charm. Simple licks and catchy riffs unadulterated. "Echo Surf Boogie" follows with a touch of Rockabilly with seasonings of Surf and Hillbilly Boogie. This song would fit perfectly in a Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez movie, as well as a cartoon theme like Johnny Bravo or Cow & Chicken.

"Fat Wolf Blues" relaxes the pace with some laid back straight-in-the-pocket Blues pickin'. Though not usually thought of as a Blues player, it's an area Don is well versed in as this song attests. Once again, subtle understatement is the order of the day. The mood continues as the pace picks up with "Hillbilly Blues". A breezy uptempo swing highlights his rarely heard Blues picking.

"Ice Cream Star" is reminiscent of later Tail Gators leading into Alamo Suite. Don pays homage to one of his biggest guitar idols, Lightnin' Hopkins, on "Lightnin's Boogie". Taking a cue the Herald Sessions' "Hopkins Sky Hop", just as Don's colleague Stevie Ray Vaughan did for "Rude Mood" in '83 on Texas Flood, he demonstrates that Hillbilly Boogie isn't the only kind of boogie he's adept at. The tempo slows down for the ballad "Louisiana Feeling" then picks back up to a rocking pace with another reworking of a Big Guitars track, this time "Ride of the Ruthless", again showcasing his mastery of combining layers and textures into a compact one-guitar arrangement. "Slow Bo" is another textbook piece for Don's compact guitar style.

"Texas Dance Hall Blues" begins winding the album down with it's easy going mid-tempo Country swing and is the closest thing on here to an Alamo Suite track. "Thunder And Lightning" closes it out in true-to-form character summarizing Don's compact, only-a-rhythm-section-needed blend of Blues, Hillbilly and Jazz.

Hillbilly Boogie Surfin' Blues is arguably the definitive Don Leady album in the same way that Exile On Main Street is the definitive Stones album. All of the elements are here; the Hillbilly Boogie and Link Wray influences heard on Trash, Twang & Thunder, the instrumental virtuosity of Alamo Suite and the Lightnin' Hopkins, Ike Turner and Lonnie Mack influences heard by friends and audiences over the last decade. Like all masterpieces the album works on different levels. For the casual listener it's simply a good disc of music to pop in when driving, eating, cleaning the house or doing just about anything. For devout audiences of any of the various genres under the umbrella heading "roots music" it's a timeless album that at once has deep roots in the traditions of American music yet is very much "right here, right now". For fans of The Tail Gators it's the multi-faceted head Gator still moving forward and a 'must have' that will round out their record collection. And for guitarists it's a textbook study on virtuosic subtlety and understatement; some of the most complex guitar stylings in American music sound effortlessly natural blended together. Rather than trying to dazzle with histrionics, the flash is under the surface. That's why it works just as well for the casual listener. And all in a compact guitar style that needs nothing more than a guitar & amp and a rhythm section. Musical minimalism at its finest.
