Album Notes
Country music fans remember Donna Ulisse from her time on Atlantic Records when she released a critically acclaimed traditional country album “Trouble at the Door” with 3 singles and two videos and appeared on “Hee Haw, “NBC’s Hot Country Nights”, “Nashville Now” and “Crook and Chase”.

Bluegrass fans have been getting to know Donna over the past few years through her own brand of bluegrass; mostly self-written. Her 2007 CD “When I Look Back” featured the song ”I’m Calling Heaven Down” which won the Top Bluegrass Song in the 2009 Just Plain Folks Awards. The title track from her 2009 release ‘Walk This Mountain Down” was in the Bluegrass Unlimited charts for six months and in June 2009 she was the #1 artist on Sirius XM Satellite radio’s Bluegrass Junction and her song “I Lied” was #1 five different times during the same year. As a writer she has recently had songs recorded by Claire Lynch, Darin & Brooke Aldridge and also had the title cut to Louise Mosrie’s “Home” which was the #1 Folk album in the nation in January 2010.

Ulisse is now offering us twelve original gospel tunes on “Holy Waters” which she refers to as her own “soul journey”. This is her third time in the studio with guitarist Keith Sewell as her producer who she credits with "getting her music" and having the ability to take her songs to a whole new level in production. For the first time she includes an outside song which is the Carter Stanley tune 'Who Will Sing For Me". After including it in her live shows in 2009 she received constant requests from show attendees for a copy of her singing it and decided to include it on this CD. Once again she surrounds herself with a stellar cast of musicians who have been on her other records: Scott Vestal on banjo, Byron House on upright bass, Rob Ickes on dobro, AndyLeftwich on fiddle and mandolin with Sewell on guitar and adding harmony vocals along with Rick Stanley and Wendy Buckner Sewell.

"Donna has already established herself as one of the top songwriters and female vocalists in bluegrass music but on "Holy Waters" we hear her heart and soul. Bluegrass gospel music doesn't get much better than this."
Wayne Rice/KSON-FM, San Diego

"Donna Ulisse is absolutely consistent. Whether she's singing of matters spiritual or matters very much down to earth, she sings with affecting depth, with thick, rich tones, and with unmistakable conviction."

"Holy Waters": Refresh Your Spiris
Donna Ulisse's "Holy Waters" is a stand-out and one of the best bluegrass gospel albums of the year, in the midst of strong competition. This has been a great decade for the genre, both for established artists like Doyle Lawson, Blue Highway and Del McCoury, and for newcomers such as Dailey and Vincent. Donna's album is a worthy addition to an amazing list of releases over the past few years. And it is her best album yet.

Donna is one of the truly independent spirits in bluegrass today, and a triple-threat of talent. She writes and/or co-writes most of her music; she leads one of the best live bands going; and she sings like an angel. All these factors come into play here, as she travels from joyous songs of faith and redemption to personal testimonies of trials and victories.

Throughout the 13 songs on "Waters", Donna shares a spiritual journey with us, the listeners. In the process we learn a lot about ourselves, too. Like all good faith journeys, some of the songs may challenge us and make us ask questions about what we believe, and struggle with, on a daily basis. I find this refreshing and stimulating - how can you not love a record that helps you learn something about yourself, and your faith? Holy Waters, indeed...

Donna is ably assisted by an outstanding group of pickers: Keith Sewell (guitar) Rob Ickes (dobro), the amazing Andy Leftwich (fiddle & mandolin), Scott Vestal (banjo) and Byron House (bass). There are stunning breaks - try "This Crazy World" for starters - and lovely solos in each track. Additional praise is due to Keith Sewell for his outstanding album production. Donna and the band sound like they're right in your living toom, sharing joyful noises with you.

We will bet that if you sound-sample either "This Crazy World" or Donna's lovely cover of Carter Stanley's "Who Will Sing For Me?" above, you'll order this CD no questions asked. We hope so!

With bravery and honesty, Donna Ulisse shares her positive energy and spirit in every note of "Holy Waters". Her music, and her heart, are worth getting to know.

Musical maturity, energy, and strong songs
Back when I reviewed her "When I Look Back album project in 2007, I saw her liner notes indicating that she was on "a merry chase to find herself." In 2009 she released "Walk This Mountain Down." Her 2010 bluegrass gospel project is "Holy Waters." It's pretty clear that she's now found her musical niche with maturity, energy, and strong songs. Donna's silky smooth vocals are the foundation of her memorable songs. "Holy Waters" is another feather in her cap, a soulful and emotional statement that is a perfect overall fit for her voice and first-rate accompanists. (Joe Ross, Joshua Tree, CA)
