Dragons On The Outer Rim began as a personal project to create some ambient electronic music for the road. I liked the idea of creating my own soundtrack I could listen to while going driving, mostly on long road trips. that idea began sometime around 2004 I back when I was working on a second album for my Terran Spiral project. Fast forward to 2011 after I had completed my digital recording studio with Logic 9 and with Omnisphere and Stylus Remix I began working on this project finally. By then this had evolved into something much more then just my own road music. I began to develop a back story for this project and what these Dragons where and the whole story around them. My love of Science Fiction, Fantasy helped to inspire both the story and the music.
Below is the outline for the whole story which you can also read on my website.
Stories from the Outer Rim
This is an outline for the backstory for Dragons On The Outer Rim as well as for a possible future MMO style game:
New Imagine is a city created and built with the idea to preserve the last of humanity if and when the coming ecological apocalypse occurs The city is in a large are east of the Cascades in Washington State. It is a domed city with massive solar arrays and windmills placed outside the city to maintain energy. A massive underground city is also built where all manufacturing resides. The outlying areas contain domed farms for crops and poultry, as well as small fish hatcheries. The construction begins in 2039 after much controversy and ridicule from a number of factions in the US and around the world. The vision for New Imagine was started by a group of artists and visionary scientists who were able to convince the US government to set aside the land and the permission to start the project.
During the previous three decades leading up to this time the political climate had not changed. Many still had doubts that there is any real threat from climate change or other environmental issues caused but human activity, even though storms and droughts had become frightful and cost trillions of dollars and thousands of lives over the three decades. Also areas of Earth were beginning to loose the normal amount of Oxygen to maintain life in those areas. At that point finally everyone began to realize it as too late do anything to stop what is coming. In 2056 the climate worsens along with the condition of the oceans to the point where it is declared that human survival is in serious jeopardy along with all life on Earth. A last ditch effort to colonize the moon began using some of the technology created to build New Imagine. Not many were able to make it to this colony by the time the disaster began.
By 2060 New Imagine is complete. During that time applicants to live in this city had all been accepted. They were from all races across the globe, however due to the limits in the size and expansion of the city the limit at 12 million was established. Also part of the criteria for being excepted is all potential residents had to be of the personality type that valued working together rather then strong independence. They all had to be non bigoted, valued the environment as highly as their own lives and had a strong spirit of imagination and community and courage to move humanity forward for survival and moving to a higher plane of existence so that past would be less likely to be repeated.
Of course this created yet another controversy for this city. By the time the city was completed and all new residence moved in, the end had begun for the rest of the World.
The story begins 156 years later after the global climate crisis turned the Earth into wasteland. In the time line prior to the the start of the story that is focused on a young lady named Sylvia, 90 years prior to this City officials along with the top selected engineers and scientists developed a vision of space program which was needed to look beyond our solar system to find an planet that can sustain humans. The first steps were to build new self contained cities nearby to New Imagine then begin a program to expand the meager base that already existed on the moon and then build a small base on Mars. After this was successfully completed a program to build new long range space ships began. Two ships were built with a design that would have the look of a Chinese style dragon which unlike the dragons of European myth were a symbol of power, strength and good luck. All three qualities where needed for this journey to the rim. Both were classified as “Dragon Class” long range space ships.
The first voyage of the two ships began 26 years after this program was launched. The two ships were named Dragon Vision and Dragon Skies. There were five destinations that these ships were traveling to within the Milky Way Galaxy that had, known solar systems, before expanding the search beyond the Milky Way. Neither ship made it to the first destination. Four years after the journey began, they came within view of an anomaly that was in their path which had already been detected. Before the two ships looked to be a rift or vortex. The rift dwarfed both ships, consisted of a gas like light in an oblong, constantly fluctuating, shape. What was even more mystifying to them was within the center of the rift they could see beyond it to the other side. What was there was a view of Earth and the Moon. A short time after this discovery the rift moved towards them at a rapid speed and pulled them in before they were able to evade it. Within a blink of an eye they found themselves back in Earth’s orbit. The rift that sent both space ships back to Earth remained in orbit after they returned home.
Sylvia’s backstory: Sylvia currently lives in New Imagine. She was born in New Imagine, one of the few births that were allowed, as the need for population control was extreme. Her dad, James who is Caucasian was an astrophysicist working with the space program. Sylvia’s mom, Alexia of Japanese descent, was a high level engineer who contributed to the building of the two dragon class space ships. Both of her parents were born and raised in New Imagine. They both met while working on the project.
At the time this story begins she is 28, 5’7”, athletic body, long black hair with blue streaks, deep green eyes that seem to pear right into another’s soul. She loved to laugh and play pranks on her friends. She lived alone with her cat, Aria, an orange tabby. (Sylvia was one of a select group that were allowed to have pets). Her passions are both art and outer space, dreaming of going on an adventure into outer space from when she was only 6 years old. She studied art in school and had a passion for both CG art on her computer as well as painting. She loved to paint with either water colors or oil paints the later being her preference. She was quite gifted at all three. She also started a local artist community that included not only painters and cg artists, but musicians and writers as well. She loved to paint whimsical scenes with her cat as the subject as well as creative visions she had of space and planets they might inhabit someday. Most of those were created via CG art.
She was one of the volunteers to join the search for earth like planets that could sustain humanity aboard the Dragon Class space ships. She was 24 when the space adventure began.
Back on Earth Sylvia was, a long with many crew members overwhelmed with requests to relate the story of what had occurred and as well as any information regarding the rift, as well as concerns about it remaining in Earth’s orbit.
One morning Sylvia was out for her daily walks around the city. She got up earlier then normal after waking up and not being able to return to sleep.
She had turned down a back street near where she lived. Up ahead, and much to her surprise was a much smaller version of the rift that she and all the crew of both Dragon Vision and Dragon Skies had encountered. Just as with the Rift at that time she could see what was on the other side. The view was a bleak very dry world, possibly another place on Earth from the look of it.
She was not going to go through it just yet. She contacted a friend that worked in the Space Program, within less then an hour several had arrived to assess what this meant and if they would attempt to send someone or a team through to the other side. Of course there was no idea if they could return or what the conditions were there. After much discussion of course Sylvia volunteered to go along with two others with deep geological expertise. after suiting up with the needed space survival suits they went through. Once on the other side they found that the rift was still there and could see back to the street they entered from. The geologists went to work on determining a location and came to the conclusion that they were in a region in the southern area of Africa. There was no life, trees or plants of any kind. Just a barren landscape stretched out before them. After testing for the amount of Oxygen they found there was only a minimal level for survival. They kept the suits on and explored for around 2 hours before returning.
The rift was remained where it had been discovered for 2 days before vanishing.
Over the next month more rifts began to appear. The next one that Sylvia found was a vision to behold. What she saw on the other side was veiled partially in myst but she could make out a deep forest.
