Great musicianship, ample energy, and plenty of personality
“My Compliments” from Eric Elias and Luke Nelson documents an excellent musical partnership that has been in place since 1998. With as many originals as covers, their acoustic jazz guitar offerings convey great musicianship, ample energy, and plenty of personality. They demonstrate an ability to breathe new life into classic standards. For example, they rearrange “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” with a fast Latin rhythm. They also serve us some tasty and swinging originals like Nelson’s “Take Your Pick” or “Minor Surgery” that clearly show the Gypsy jazz influence of Django Reinhardt. I’d like to hear what a violinist of Stephane Grappelli’s caliber could do with these numbers.

This acoustic guitar duo with their cohesive sound presents some magic and mighty compelling music that recalls yesteryear. Elias and Nelson are very technically compatible and musically in tune with each other. Their offerings are both masterful and playful. For example, Nelson’s melodic “Isle of View” provides some memorable melodic passages that transport us on an impressionable musical journey. Luke Nelson contributes seven originals, and Elias penned two (“The Sandman” and “Rumor Has It”). Their most technically impressive number probably is “Chicken ‘a la Swing,” from some other seminal influences, the guitar duo of Kress and McDonough. Both Nelson and Elias endorse and use Stromberg guitars on this CD. A gripping performance! (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)
