Album Notes
For eight years El Tule (el TOO-lay) has been honing its unique sound combining influences of Cumbia, Merengue, Afro-Cuban, Rock, Salsa and Reggae. The music is influenced by art, history and culture often focusing on legends and tales of the mystical. Fan favorites include El Chupacabra, an eerie tale of the legendary goat sucker, La Ruta Maya, a pounding tribute to the famed Mayan Route and Media Noche, an ode to the dream like hours between night and daybreak. The ever evolving sound is a natural progression brought forth by different backgrounds, experiences and influences. While adhering to the bands original goal, the sound has taken its own course. The sound..."El sonido" that El Tule brings to each performance naturally transcends all cultural and social backgrounds. Simple, El Tule is for those who love to dance, feel good and enjoy the positive expression of music.

El Tule
I first saw El Tule at a live show earlier this year. Their personal and unique blend of musical influences (to mention just a few) from cumbia to reggae to Jimi Hendrix (just a taste, but he's there) and beyond makes them an entertaining and fun band to experience live. The dance floor stays full and those not on the floor can be seen dancing, as best they can, in their chairs. With two fine singer/guitarists, four strong percussionists and a female bass player who ties up the groove and makes the whole thing happen, this band is something special in the live setting.
Finding this CD gave me a chance to experience another side of El Tule: as is well known, the recording studio is a different kind of "room" to play to, and some bands can excel "either/or", but not both live and in recordings. In these polished but still vibrant performances, El Tule shows their "live" power (a good kind of power!) is no accident-- this band can play live and take care of business in the studio, too.
I was going to pick a "favorite" song to recommend but better to just listen and find your own. And if you happen to be in the neighborhood when they're playing live, whether you want to dance or just tap your foot and vibrate where you sit, by all means attend and perhaps, as I did with this CD, recognize a favorite song you've heard before in a different venue.
