ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
“Juxtaposition” is exactly what it says it is: a refreshingly unique blending of styles, from acoustic folk/pop to electric rock and blues … richly textured guitar compositions coupled with unusually intellectual and introspective lyrics, sung with gut-wrenching honesty. The whole is much more than the sum of its parts.

Imagine some mad guitar wizard producing a hybrid of Ronnie Montrose and Leo Kottke … and then marrying it off to a wild siren sprung from the DNA of Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin. Their offspring might be Enigma.

Enigma is a dynamic performing/songwriting team out of Southeast Nebraska, but don’t hold that against them. (For more bio information, check out their website.) Guitarist and composer David Epp jokingly describes his work as, “a combination of mess and finesse.” An eclectic musician, Epp draws from a variety of inspirations to produce provocative works speaking to – and from – every corner of the soul. His inventive writing style and powerful expression provide a beautifully complex framework for vocalist/lyricist Carolyn Olesen, who herself is an amalgam of incurable rebelliousness and rigid discipline. Her lyrics explore joy and sadness, clarity and madness, past intermingled with present; from sassy to sublime, abject fear to just plain fun, Olesen’s poetry and delivery reflect the depth and extremes of human experience.

“Until This Is Over” was recently signed by Brandon Hills Music (BMI), LLC, of Brandon, WI. Publisher Marsha L. Brown will be submitting this tune for TV and Film through BMI and Sony/BMG of New York, and also through several producers in California.

“David and Carolyn are two extremely talented writers and performers,” said Brown. “Their music is uniquely original. They have extraordinary writing skills, and if you combine the voices of Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Melissa Etheridge and Sass Jordan, you will have Carolyn Olesen.”

Everything is interconnected. Nothing stands absolutely alone.

Juxta-rollercoaster
From the start of the CD, "Sunshine & Wine" to the cacophonic ending of "Until This is Over", I got a sense of a roller-coaster ride. I think there's another European group of the same name and while this band might think about another moniker, the music is excellent. The recording is a little rough in spots, which leads me to believe that it's an in-house job, but it's the SONGS that are so captivating.

Really different - worth a listen!
What I like the most about this CD is that it is so different from anything on the radio nowdays - instead of the typical "I love you but you broke my heart," "I love you and we're in heaven," or "You hurt me and I'm so freakin' mad," these guys write some really unusual themes, and write them well. The words and the music are a wonderful blending, written with really blatant honesty, and performed in a style you just don't hear these days.

Enigmatic Blend
Enigma's premier CD, Juxtaposition is a permanent resident of this reviewer's musical must-haves. A tantalizing buffet of Carolyn's raw-edged-silk-draped-soul power vocals driven hard upon David's elegant-class string work. An experience blending explosive first taste followed by a soothing afterglow. Enigma tends to remind it's listeners of striking duets en 'par with the likes of Michelle Branch and Carlos Santana. Beautiful vocals over and inlaid with cool elegance and quality class. "Dance With You" being a fine example of the duet's command of seduction of sound and ability to fuse their throbbing energy into a solidly-fused union.
Having followed Carolyn's aspirations musical for a decade, I can attest that her evolution has experienced many enigmatic twists and turns. Enigma fans everywhere will not be disappointed in Juxtaposition. Original, substantive, and unpredictable, as ever. Enigma serves up this duo's combined talents and pulsing energy course after course.

Makes you listen.
This CD caught my attention from the start. I really liked the layered harmonies, and the variety of types of songs.

"stick in your head" songs - the GOOD kind!
Juxtaposition is just that - a flash back and a giant step forward. By 'back'I mean to the days when rock was truly CREATIVE. And that is counterpointed with refreshing new lyrical energy that steps far out and away from the drivel on today's airways. While it's is quite multifaceted, I love it's mystical qualities most, particularly the song "Pagan Moon". Epp and Oleson obviously bring both a disciplined skill and a raw, untamed energy to their craft of song writing. What a team! I hope they keep it up! Can't wait to hear the next CD.
