Album Notes

While listening to the CD I suddenly got captured within the music, instead of listening to the music in order to write an objective review I suddenly found myself being enthralled by Eoin Duignan’s vision and I forgot about my task. I don’t know if this makes any sense to you, but I certainly will leave it like that. I hope this writing will give you an idea of the album. Sarah Mc Quaid, Hot Press Magazine 21 OCT. 2004
"As far as I can recall this is the first time in nearly a decade of reviewing that I `ve given a Ten/Ten rating to an album by a living artist It`s warranted . Lumina is a stunning achievement. "

Siobhán Long The Irish Times 30th July 2004.
"If music offers a window to the soul, then that of the piper and whistle player Eoin Duignan is a kaelidoscopic fanlight into a world where the spirit reigns unopposed"

An t-Athair Pádraig ó Fiannachta.
"We are enthralled, captivated and raised to a new level of delightful experience when we share in a work that reaches a certain point of excellence: in the midst of the trials of life we get as it were a taste of heaven.

With music that has been described as "gentle and generous, very personal but well rooted in the tradition of pipe playing" and with an "unmistakable passion" Irish Uilleann Pipe and Low Whistle player, Eoin Duignan has been pushing the boundaries of Irish Traditional music from his home in the heart of the West-Kerry Gaeltacht for over 20 years. His third CD Lumina a six part suite written for low whistles tracing the journey of the spirit from birth to death and rebirth. The music was evoked and inspired by the six magnificent Harry Clarke stained-glass windows in Díseart Chapel, Dingle, County Kerry.
Influenced from an early age by master pipers Seamus Ennis and Leo Rowesome, much of Eoin's inspiration has come from the rich traditions of Irish history and folklore as well as his own life and experiences. Over the years he has developed a distinctive musical style, original in a traditional mode, which ranges from haunting slow airs to lively percussive reels and jigs, and they have enchanted audiences worldwide from the USA, across Europe and as far east as China and Taiwan.
To date Eoin Duignan has produced two successful and critically acclaimed albums. His first Coumineol was released in 1994 and was described by Hot Press as "a highly listenable collection . . . that should appeal to everyone who appreciates high quality, refined and delicate music". In 1999 Ancient Rite, a collection of original compositions brought the listener on a captivating musical journey from Budapest to West Kerry. Mic Moroney, writing for the Irish Times described it as "a disc of mystic easy listening".
On Lumina , Eoin is joined by some of Ireland's finest musicians including producer Gerry O'Beirne, Máire Breathnach and Liam O Maonlaoí.
The six part suite gathers together these acclaimed musicians on a collection of original compositions and brings the listener on a colourful and illuminating journey, through life, through sadness and laughter, pain and joy and shows us that
"in the midst of the trials of life we get as it were a taste of heaven".

Perfect for rainy days!
I had the opportunity to listen a live performance of Eoin in the town of Dingle (IR), a rainy summer evening in 2005. He's a gifted musician and Lumina reveals his talent.

Peter Miller

This is a beautifully crafted album.
The playing, the production, everything about it is 5 stars.
