ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A vibrant palette of pianistic color, Romantic sweep, vivid imagination -- these are the qualities that distinguish Russian piano music of the 19th century. The combined resources of two pianists and two pianos, in the hands of great composers like Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky, create an unforgettable sound. Russian Masterpieces showcases both original works for the medium and arrangements. The Second Suite, Op. 17 by Rachmaninoff has long been considered the epitome of the Piano Duo repertoire, a veritable symphony, no less virtuosic than his Piano Concertos. Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, perhaps his most famous song, has been arranged for just about every instrument. The EStrella Duo performs Greg Anderson's moving and effective transcription for one piano four hands. Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, usually performed as a solo piano or orchestral work. This two-piano arrangement approaches the richness of the orchestral version.
