When Fish Heads & Rice released their second album for Milan’s Appaloosa Records, 4 HEADS, they had developed an underground cult following throughout Europe as one of the most authentic Memphis R&B groups since the 60s. Gary Talley, the original guitar player for the Box Tops, Walter Ferguson, from John Fred’s Playboy Band, David James, bass and vocals and Stuart Brower, drums, had toured extensively for over two years by this time, including dates with B. B. King, Ry Cooder, Keb Mo and Robin Ford and it shows on this record. The group is tight, polished and rocking, just like their live shows. The addition of Dennis Taylor (Saxophone) and Terry Townson (Trumpet) gives the record the sound of a good old fashioned R&B revue.
The pattern of other artists recording songs written by the Fish Heads continued on 4 HEADS with both Dorothy Moore ("More Moore" Malaco Records) and Michael Burks ("I Smell Smoke" Alligator Records) cutting David’s “Lie To Me”. In addition to their own compositions, the CD features tunes by great writers like Russell Smith, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, Gary Nicholson and Lee Roy Parnell.
More songs by David James can be heard on his solo CDs, EISENHOWER HIGH and CLEAN GETAWAY, as well as Fish Heads & Rice’s other releases, CERTIFIED and SOMETHING SMELLS FISHY. All are available on CDBaby.
