Not one, but two albums by artist Former, are set to hit the shelves by August 23. And just like the artist himself, the albums come far and wide.
A cross all their differences, Secretly Flowing and Music for Babies both carry the same DNA. On Secretly Flowing this is dressed in.. well, some sort of neo-classic electric instrumentation, in ya’ face, slightly twisted in the production and squeezed into what is fundamentally pop templates.
This album pretty much sums up one itinerary through the artists earlier releases. There is a (straight?) line from the very first inception and the 12” Every Little James Dean in 1989, through Denmark’s first grunge outfit Boghandle in the nineties. But then again..
This is probably where Music for Babies comes in. Because another itinerary would have to pass though the electronic world beat trio Deepfried Toguma, and Music for Babies builds on the thought-provoking unrest, the melancholy and the peaceful universe from this early trip hop collaboration.
So, where are back at the DNA once again. In its purest form, we find it in the discretely recurring ethereal slide guitars that have become a trademark of the artist. Soundscapes, that are launched only to take on a life of their own. Not unlike DNA, in fact..
Add to this the sparkling voice of singer Annevig Schelde Ebbe, evocative sonic textures and Formers’ distinctive conception of instrumentation, and you have Secretly Flowing.
Add instead a mixture of minimalist piano pieces, consonant harmony, steady pulse and slow transformations, and you have Music for Babies.
Maybe this is what it’s all about? Feeling this original spark of inspiration – maybe through twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds like a certain princess – and try to convey what the shape and form is like.
This is what Former does. He is a former, an audio sculptor. Give him some rock instrumentation and a pop template, or give him a piano and a computer, what comes out remains variations of a theme. A forming theme.
