ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
GARY HARRIS
Gary Harris - Opening and sharing the stage with musical pioneers and innovators such as Kim Waters, Norman Brown, Gerald Albright, Will Downing, Bobby Lyle, Phil Perry, Tower of Power, Bo Diddly, and The Gap Band; Gary Harris propels his way atop the Jazz genre while sharing his musical genius with other notable and talented artists (The Coaters, Percy Sledge, Trudy Lynn, Cecil Welch, William Bell, Gwin McCray, Leslie Gore, Jean Carn, Outkast, and Ann Nesby).

A young impressionable Gary Harris became captivated by music and the saxophone at an early age after hearing “Pink Panther” played by a saxophonist while in grade school. Further nurturing Gary’s newfound interest and his gift of music, Gary’s parents presented him with his first musical instrument, a flute; as Gary honed his musical gift with intense passion he later received his very own saxophone by age 10. By grade 7 Gary participated in his first talent show, a performance which set precedence in Gary Harris’ life, to create music for people to move to and be moved by. Throughout adolescence, Gary gained valuable experience and exposure playing gigs for house parties, store grand openings, local festivals, and musical competitions around his home of Atlanta, Georgia. Answering the beaconing call of higher education, Gary attended Columbus College where he elevated his artistry, becoming proficient in playing the Tenor Saxophone; playing a stint of academic musical chairs Gary returned to Atlanta and enrolled at Georgia State University & Dekalb College where he played alto sax and tenor sax.

Adding to the knowledge he had already possessed, college strengthened Gary’s foundation in music and his instrument of choice, the saxophone. Gary struck out on his own after college, continuing to build his fan base and musical credibility by showcasing his skills doing gigs around Atlanta. With lucrative offers to display and share his gift, Gary has participated in various national and international festivals such as: NARNI Black Music Festival (Italy), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), North Sea Jazz Festival (Amsterdam), Georgia Music Hall of Fame Award Show, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Coca Cola Atlanta Music Awards, and the Benson & Hedges Jazz Festival to name a few.

Since early 2000 Harris has played a weekly four hour set at Atlanta’s Jazz staple, Café 290 while currently placing the finishing touches to his debut musical masterpiece which is slated for a late 2008 release. Proving to be a testament of what determination, patience, and making one’s dream reality are all about, Harris has blossomed from local sensation to an international musician with flair and appeal, Gary Harris personifies creativity and...All That Jazz!

Gary Harris
Saxophonists Gary Harris’ name has become synonymous with the ubiquitous Atlanta Jazz scene. His long anticipated debut CD “Here for You” captures the essence of southern influenced smooth jazz. He begins with the mid-tempo appetizer “Remember This”. This song and a few notable others are produced by Magic Dream’s William Green – who lays the foundation for the CD and is joined by the likes of drummer Melvin Baldwin, bassist Sean Michael Ray and guitarist Reggie Ward. Just as Gary begins to spin his web of tenor sex, trumpeter and producer Joey Summerville injects the soulful “In the Pocket” in the mix.

Known for his rich sonorous voicing, Harris continues the tenor madness through “Under the Radar” and takes an unexpected ride through the blues on guitarists Colin Sober’s “Malvina’s Song”. With an appearance on B3 by the great Ike Stubblefield, this song is my personal favorite here, as it demonstrates Gary’s bountiful approach to sharing the spotlight – advice many saxophonists should take note to do on their solo releases. The title cut “Here For You” further highlights this as Harris trades quips with guitarist Eric Essex, and a simple yet catchy horn arrangement; while the rich vocal tones of songstress Toni Redd lace the track with luminance and chromaticity. Other standout tunes for me are “Don’t Talk Back” written by drummer PJ Spraggins and “There You Go” also by the talented guitarists Colin Sobers.

Gary’s subtle yet flirtatious styling’s is fitting for the times and just a wonderful offering to share with your friends who claim to love smooth jazz with an edge. Having an all-star cast of Atlanta’s hottest musician’s works in Harris’ favor as he delivers a tasteful treat.
